Large pools. The HKJC will host the wagering pools on races three through eight on Saudi Cup Day, giving bettors access to the biggest international commingled pools in the world. SIS will coordinate the commercial arrangements with global pool operators. Historically, North America has been the largest participant in the Saudi Cup Day pools and this deal not only benefits that market with increased liquidity from Hong Kong, but attracts additional operators from France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, who join existing operators from Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, Peru and Panama. www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/the-saudi-cup-to-be-a-world-pool-event/

Baffert had his heart attack in UAE - ironically I don’t believe Godolphin has ever sent him a horse to train . Zedan who is a Saudi is of course one of Baffert’s biggest supporters so no surprise he’s running there. Bill Mott also doesn’t appear to have any qualms about racing in the Middle East . ’

JAN R3 (9:05am ET)- 1m2½f Neom Turf Cup (Group 3) (4yo+) (Inner Track) (Turf) (4yo+) $1,500,000www.racingpost.com/racecards/1016/riyadh/2023-02-25/834092#1- Byline (pp3) was a sprinter in GB, then spent the last two years in Bahrain as a consistent miler. Last two races at 9 & 10 F stretched him, but don't blame connections for trying this race after a good third behind Warren Point last time. Hoping for a minor placing. #2- Castle (pp5) was a modest runner in France, just purchased by local connections. Had a C&D win most recently. Puncher's chance. #3- Dubai Future (pp2) 7yo Godolphin runner has gotten better with age. Finished second to superior stablemate Valiant Prince in Meydan GII last month. Ran a decent fifth in the 15F Red Sea Turf H. here last year, this would seem to be a better distance for him. Every chance to be involved at the finish. #4- Eagle's Flight (pp1) ex-Irish runner has shown little on turf, drew the rail under Barzalona so may be sent to the front. #5- Flying Visit (pp6) was an okay 3yo for Jim Bolger in Ireland, then changed hands to local connections last winter and ran a career best, finishing sixth in this race behind Japan-based Authority a year ago. Not without hope for a placing. #6- Missed the Cut (pp9) was a highly-progressive 3yo in GB, culminating in a handicap win at Royal Ascot over good-firm, then faltered when sent to a GII in France over softer ground. Reappeared at Lingfield (AW) in November, winning the Churchill S. (Listed) over a good field including Algiers, which has subsequently dominated two GII fields at Meydan when moved to dirt. Trainer Boughey reaches out to Oisin Murphy for the ride, just back from a long suspension and riding in white-hot form. Should vie for favoritism with: #7- Mostahdaf (pp4) exciting Shadwell runner from the Gosden barn, son of Frankel won six of first seven starts and finished second behind Broome in Royal Ascot GII, then had a physical issue that kept him away until the fall. AW comeback was sensational winning the September S. (GIII), then ran last of twenty behind Alpinista in the Arc, over very soft going he clearly hated. This may be a 'prep' for one of the GIs at Meydan on World Cup night, but that doesn't mean he can't win. #8- Peter the Great (pp7) was a good handicapper for the Gosdens, sold to local interests since last run in GB. Distance hits him square in the wheelhouse, needs to find a bit on form but not completely out of it. #9- Sir Busker (pp8) GII-winner ran well at the highest level last season, tuned up for this with an AW second with Ryan Moore aboard, who steers again in the Kennet Valley colors (cool silks!) Should be there or thereabouts. #10- Star of Wins (pp11) son of Sea the Stars won the C&D prep for this last season, then went on the shelf. Ex-Haggas/Sunderland runner drew widest, needs to find a number of lengths but isn't impossible as a board-crasher. #11- White Moonlight (pp10) also drew outside. Lightly-raced 6yo mare has vastly improved over last three runs, including a second to With the Moonlight in the Cape Verdi S. (GII) at Meydan last time. Tough ask but Saeed bin Suroor doesn't tilt at windmills. TRI- 7/3,6,9/2,3,5,6,9,11 Result: 7,3,5 Triple $498.30 Mostahdaf was very impressive, drawing off through the stretch after a stalking trip behind a moderate pace. Dubai Future also separated himself from the rest, good effort from him. Saw the orange silks of the third-place finisher closing late, knew I had used him underneath but didn't know he went off at 55-1! Very satisfying result.EX- 3,6/3,5,6,7,9,11 TW

JAN R4 (9:45am ET)- *7f 1351 Turf Sprint (Group 3) (4yo+) (Inner Track) (Turf) (4yo+) $1,500,000www.racingpost.com/racecards/1016/riyadh/2023-02-25/834093#1- Bathrat Leon (pp7) all four wins were at a mile, has won GIIs on dirt & turf, but might be just a cut below this group at a trip that is too sharp. #2- Casa Creed (pp6) has been such an honest horse, multiple GI-winner tries every time and excels in extended sprints. Second in this last year (from pp12) to Songline, which re-opposes. The one to beat. #3- Garrus (pp4) is a GIII-winner, 6f specialist. Added distance-question has be answered, might also want some cut to the ground. Don't see him as the winner, but in the mix underneath. #4- Lauda Sion (pp8) hasn't won in last nine runs, did go fourth in this race last year. Similar profile to Bathrat Leon, but should love the 7F. Place chances. #5- Lusail (pp5) was a superior 2yo that couldn't find the winner's circle at three, though he danced all the dances, mostly GIs. Gets James Doyle aboard for first race since September. Not an easy read, but siding against. #6- Pogo (pp10) is one of my favorite horses-in-training. Had his best season as a 6yo last year, winning two GIIIs and a GII before running a decent mid-pack finish in the BC Mile. 7F specialist typically makes all the running, gets best mate Kieran Shoemark back in the irons. Fits the bill. #7- Raaed (pp3) has liittle chance at this level, C&D distance win last month but this is a vastly stronger field. #8- Rozgar (pp11) ran very well as a 3yo in France for The Aga Khan/Graffard, sold to Saudi interests after a poor run at Longchamp last fall. Have to wonder why they would let him go if he was still sound and of graded-stakes potential? Bad draw probably squashes any chance regardless. #9- Happy Romance (pp1) ran third in this last season, draws the rail for the sequel. Was raced too optimistically last year IMO, needs some class relief and 6F for his best. Minor award again is probably his ceiling. Now watch Hannon make a fool of me. #10- Resistencia (pp9) has only ever raced in Group-level events (16/4-5-2), even his debut win as a 2yo. Has run some big races against the best Japan has to offer, gets Ryan Moore in the Carrot Farm colors (love those silks!) today. Probably a side saver bet, as I'd hate to be sitting empty handed after she wins. #11- Songline (pp2) is now a GI-winner, winning the Yasuda Kinen at a mile for Sunday Racing (also sharp silks!) after taking down this race last year. Lemaire re-rides, should be duking it out in the stretch. Could be the race of the day. EX- 2,6/2,3,4,5,6,10,11 WIN- 10 TW

Wow Ten Furlongs, you really did due dillgence on this one. Best of luck to you!
I don't know enough about that racecourse to 'cap it.
Will be routing for some of the JPN entries, I like LeMaire riding. Also Yuga Kawada and Moeria of course. Interesting to see Chantal Sutherland riding a few on the undercard.
As for the politics of it all, Horse racing has been part of the Saudi culture for thousands of years and world politics isn't going to change that. Anyone worried about modern slavery/forced labor would need to toss their iPhones, Abercrombie & Fitch, BMW, Adidas, as well as never again eat a candy bar from Nestle, Hershey or Mars too. When I boycott something i do it with the exactitude of a heat-seeking missile; I don't do boycotts-of-convenience. (I have managed to never have purchased anything on Amazon, in my entire life though..that's what I mean, if I'm gonna do it I do it 100%).

well...i don't own anything affiliated with any of those companies and have avoided nestle like the plaugue for decades (the dead babies thingie). not sure what the problems with hershey and mars are, but i know if i buy candy i only spend pennies on the dollar. amazon i use, no doubt. as to politics i tend to go by current events...cutting people into little pieces or holding wives and/or daughters hostage sorta sucks; like invading other countries, poisoning diplomats etc

JAN R5 (10:25am ET)- 1m7f Red Sea Turf Handicap (4yo+) (Inner Track) (Turf) (4yo+) $2,500,000www.racingpost.com/racecards/1016/riyadh/2023-02-25/834094#2- Trawlerman (pp9) really improved at the end of last year, winning the Ebor and finishing third behind Trueshan and Coltrane at Ascot. Frankie rides for the Gosden yard. #4- Al Qareem (pp11) will love the distance, gets some weight from the top ones, has room for more improvement. Price should be right. EX- 2,4/1,2,3,4,6,7 TW

I have no insight into the dirt track here, other than 'they' say that it has a high fine-sand mix, with less harsh kickback that some turf horses can handle if they want to give it a go. Getting PPs, replays and other data points has been frustrating, but I don't play the dirt races heavily anyways. TW
