She is an extremely talented singer but it seemed like the whole number from the opening cue between her and her piano player was just off.
Dell - What do vocalists hear through those earpieces? Whatever she was hearing it wasn’t what she expected.

She has a either a director or stage manager in her ear giving the cue to begin. "Heeeeeeeey" was her surprised response to a voice telling her to start the song. Looks like the opening piano vamp was supposed to coincide with the camera push-in, landing on the singer as she begins to sing. Watch again and imagine the opening vamp. It times perfectly to the moment she turns her head to the accompanist and says "OK." That's when she should have started singing. Would have been a nice piece of direction. Interesting camera move to start the number. I think they probably blew the cue. She even looked a little frozen for a moment or two. Sound from a microphone on the piano, and her sound is transmitted to the earpieces. Most importantly, the earpieces block out the crowd noise. There are echoes and delays from speakers all around the race track or stadium which can distract and confuse a singer. Broadway theatres have great acoustics. Outside venues are a different kind of challenge. There is also the adrenaline rush from singing to a large audience. It can overwhelm. At Del Mar, I was so excited to be singing with my daughter and grandsons at the track, I started the song about a half-step too high. Wasn't sure I'd make the final note. Yikes! It isn't easy, but it sure is a thrill... I'm thinking Belmont/Dell Yount New York, New York 2025

35 years of being at Belmont caused me to not like the song on that day…. They put the volume way too high… best part of the song timing is it means the blaring rap music is over! imo loud music on big race days is a bad idea. Trying to appeal to younger fans hasn’t worked that well, and cappers dislike the loud music. Belmont’s after racing concerts didn’t work and screwed up the lirr back to penn schedule….. something in the courtyards or infield seems to work the best and gives the younger non racing crowd something between eaces(which is extended on big days).
I guess I am old news, because I like a quiet peaceful day at the track.

They should never have changed it from this song. Replaced by New York New York in 1996.
