I sure made a mess of that one, pari-mutuelly speaking.
Anyone else see Tyler Gafflione give Sierra Leone a hip check leaving the 1/8 pole? Couldn't help but laugh.
Seems like Danny Gargan has been darkening Dornoch's form since the FOY win. That was a fine performance -- but it got a measly 101 Beyer.
With the possible exception of Mindframe, this bunch doesn't have the makings of a varsity athlete. If City Of Troy is half the horse O'Brien says, he'll romp in the Travers.
Sierra Leone will never win a major G1. Bad running style, bad mechanics and just isn't very fast. His pace & speed figs say he's more clopper than closer.
As for Resilience, Mott told ya so. Next stop: King's Bishop. I bet they don't attempt 9 f. again this year. The critter spit the bit at the quarter pole.

You noted “ Seems like Danny Gargan has been darkening Dornoch's form since the FOY win. That was a fine performance -- but it got a measly 101 Beyer.”
Time was not impressive considering how souped up the track was.

Anybody seen post-race quotes from the losing jockeys and trainers?

Thanks, 5wide. I guess no one at NYRA was intact enough to get a quote from Mott.

Not sure I get the part about Gargan "darkening" Dornoch's form. All the way up to March, Dornoch was running 1st or 2nd in every race. 5 races. All I remember hearing at the time was dornoch, dornoch, dornoch, dornoch. Then came the Bluegrass, where he was keen to run and wasn't allowed. Then of course, I'm sure Gargan "planned" for Mystik Dan to almost squash Dornoch into the rail like a bug but that is part and parcel of the chaos race called the KY Derby. All I see is a trainer who patiently brought along a horse and seems to have "solved" his problems by having him ready for one of the biggest races in the TC series. A BSF of 101 isn't acceptable? I remember clearly that's why Andy Beyer proclaimed he was leaving Zenyatta off his ticket entirely, including the superfecta. Even after she had beat the best boys in the nation in her first BCC. You know, her "BSF figures" weren't good enough. That horses are only as good as their BSF isn't something I subscribe to though. It does make you wonder how the rest of the world handicaps horses who don't come with PPs that give BSFs though. That seemed to confuse a lot of people trying to figure out Forever Young.

As for Gargan, that was a joke.
As Dornoch's 101, that's a poor G1 figure by any measure.

I don't use BSFs, btw, but they are the coin of the realm and they do represent a solid measure of relative talent.
Also, blanket finishes on dirt generally = a subpar race. The Derby and Belmont both were blanket finishes. Slow blanket finishes.

As for Gargan, that was a joke. Okay sorry I didn't pick up on that. Not everyone uses emoticons (I understand why) so hard for me to tell sometimes. Danny Gargan took another KY Derby runner (Society Man) to the Matt Winn stakes at CDX (1-1/16th) on 6/09 and he won it with Brian Hernandez aboard. 1 month after his horse ran in the KY Derby. I really had liked the 2nd place runner in there, Who Dey, thought he was under the radar most of the TC season and was thinking he might run in one fo them, but it seems that his trainer knew he wasn't a 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 horse.

Mott questioning his horse's ability to get the distance pre race isn't much different than other "trainer-speak", is it?
Opposite side of the coin is all the trainers who tell us their horse CAN get the distance....and then also fail.
Do they even know, esp. if horse is attempting to do something for first time?
Let us see vet reports, reasons why horses are on vet list, treatments, etc.
Transparency is what would be meaningful to many.
Talk is cheap.

>>>>>Mott questioning his horse's ability to get the distance pre race isn't much different than other "trainer-speak", is it?
Sure it is. Mott isn't a b.s.'er, and he wasn't speculating. He was reacting to Resilience backing up in the Derby. Stopped at the 3/16 pole just like hundreds before him who wanted no part of 10 f.

They don't know. They can't know. They're just hoping and guessing, so I ignore them.
One thing's for sure: Pedigrees are not flying carpets. Slow horses don't turn into fast horses just because an extra furlong is added, no matter who their progenitors are.
I pay slightly more attention to that stuff in the Belmont. Like last year, there's no way i WASN'T going to bet on a colt by Arrogate out of a Tapit mare. Especially at 8-1.
