I've listened to both Pletcher and Asmussen about foaling dates, as well as many other buyers of horses. July is pretty much the cut off date of course, since 60%+ or so of KY Derby winners have been born in Feb/March.
May foals may be a bit later to mature, so do take some further analysis. However, there have been a few who have won the KY Derby. Here is what I have.
We don't know for certain some of the foaling dates of the very early Derby winnners, before 1918 --- but based on what I have, call it only 11 horses? Up until 2014 there were only 8 that I know of.
Since then there have only been 3 that I counted, including the DQed horses.
Recent History: 2014 to 2024: Tapiture May 3rd, finished 15th in KY Derby Bayern May 3rd, never ran in KY Derby but was 9th in the Preakness
Maximum Security (DQed) May 14 Country House May 8 Authentic May 5
Became 3-year-olds, according to the calendar, after they won the Kentucky Derby: Mine That Bird May 10 War Admiral, May 2 Thunder Gulch May 23 Spend A Buck May 15 Cannonade May 12 Lucky Debonair May 2 Northern Dancer May 27 Exterminator May 30 in 1918
This year's May foals: Honor Marie (birthday is derby day) Just a Touch T O Password Epic Ride (if he makes the gate)

A good gimmick wager: exacta box or trifecta box with may foals.
Mine That Bird (May 10) + Pioneer of the Nile (May 5th) + Musket Man (May 20th) for example paid very nicely.
Exacta $ 2,074.80 Trifecta $ 41, 500.60
