Nominal feature is the GII (Sandown) Mile for older horses, including Lord North on a turnback in distance, but the focus is on the Classic Trial (GIII) at 10F for 3yos.
GOING: GOOD, Good to soft in places on Round course (GoingStick: 6.7) (Light rain)
SAN R1 (8:15am ET)- 5f (5f10y) Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-100)
www.racingpost.com/racecards/54/sandown/2024-04-26/864393
#4- Miaharris (4-1) won a Listed event in her second start, then found GIII-company just a bit too tough in two subsequent starts. Trainer Owen Burrows does very well with his small but top-level yard, and Wm Buick sees fit to ride.
WIN- 4
SAN R2 (8:50am ET)- 1m Esher Cup Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-105)
www.racingpost.com/racecards/54/sandown/2024-04-26/864392
Hard to get a grasp on a field of young 3yos when many are making their handicap debuts. #5- Hand of God (3-1) came to hand slowly last summer, but put it all together on his final start, winning a decent Newmarket maiden by 2+ lengths. Hopefully he's wintered well, and the Charlton yard has come out in good form so far.
WIN- 5
SAN R3 (9:25am ET)- 1m2f (1m1f209y) Gordon Richards Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+)
www.racingpost.com/racecards/54/sandown/2024-04-26/864390
#3- Desert Hero (5-2) races in the Royal colours. Sea The Stars colt wasn't quite ready for last year's Derby, but won the King George at Royal Ascot, then the Gordon Stakes (GIII) at Goodwood, and finished off with a good third in the St. Leger. Mr. Haggas seemed pleased with his preparation this Spring, but he doesn't have to win this, with bigger fish (and chips) to fry down the road. #6- Okeechobee (5-1) 5yo Juddmonte gelding has done little wrong in his limited career (5//3-2-0), progessive son of Time Test was second behind Dubai Honor on seasonal debut in AW Listed race at Kempton. There could be lots more to come from this one, and Ryan Moore does the steering for the Charltons today.

SAN R4 (10:00am ET)- 1m Mile (Group 2) (Class 1) (4yo+)
www.racingpost.com/racecards/54/sandown/2024-04-26/864389
#2- Poker Face (5-1) was deftly spotted in his races last year by the Crisford yard, and succeeded in GII company in France at Longchamp in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein (GII). Carries a 3lb penalty today for that victory, and faces the toughest group of foes that he's ever seen, but he's stepped up every time and deserves this shot. #3- Charyn (5-2) raced against only the best last season, only filling out some minor placings while still bringing home good prize money. If he has turned a corner with his 3+ length demolition of opponents last month in the Doncaster Mile, he could have a say in the big mile races going forward.

SAN R5 (10:35am ET)- 1m2f (1m1f209y) Classic Trial (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo)

Big favorite will be #1- Arabian Crown (even) for Godolphin/Appleby/Buick. Progressive Derby hopeful ended last season with a bang, taking the Zetland Stakes (GIII) by 5+ lengths over a small group. Logical starting point, but doesn't have to win this. #9- War Rooms (5-1) is a fairly expensive Churchill colt from the Owen Burrows yard, ran hugely on debut last summer beating a solid field of novices at Doncaster going seven, then third in his only other start in the Flying Scotsman S. (Listed), also at Doncaster over 7F. Needs to handle the stretchout today, but should handle it on pedigree.
EX- 1,9/1,3,5,7,9
SAN R7 (11:45am ET)- 1m2f (1m1f209y) Handicap (Class 4) (3yo 0-85)
www.racingpost.com/racecards/54/sandown/2024-04-26/864394
Normally might skip the last race on the card, a lesser handicap, but I never pass up the chance to bet a 10F race (hence my moniker). #3- Goodwood Odyssey (6-1) (sire is Ulysses, golf clap) won his only start as a 2yo at a mile at Salisbury, then finished second on seasonal debut against an AW novice field at Kempton two weeks ago. Choice in a crapshoot, with the one I really liked from Karl Burke a scratch.
EX- 3/1,4,11
Good luck if you play, and you should.
