CUR R1 (8:35am ET)- 5f Irish EBF Maiden (2yo) Three Two runners in here from the Adrian Murray yard, which won this race last year with Bucanero Fuerte, including two one for Amo Racing et al. First runners for freshman sires Far Above, Verbal Dexterity, Arizona, and Sergei Prokofiev. Betting market should offer the best clues, but on paper the three of interest are: #1- Arizona Blaze (7-2) £82,000 yearling, both of dam's previous foals are winners, including one as a 2yo. Newly retained Amo stable jockey David Egan is back from his winter stint at Gulfstream Park, and he lands here. #5- Monotone (10-1) first runner for sire that won the National Stakes (GI) as a 2yo, yard (Jim Bolger) has won this race four times since 2012. #8- Charanda (5-1) €90,000 yearling, sire Ardad gets precocious 2yos in bunches, seems most-likely-to on pedigree.
Results: 1,6,5 Arizona Blaze ($4.20) had to fight hard for the win, with Rowdy Yates joining him on the lead two furlongs out, maybe getting his nose in front for a few strides, but the winner pulled away late for a length victory.CUR R2 (9:05am ET)- 5f Handicap (3yo+) #3- Laugh A Minute (10-1) is following the same pattern as the last two years when he won this event, had a tuneup on the AW at Dundalk last month, enters today on a 7lb higher mark than last year, but gets 5lbs off from apprentice Caffrey. Has handled heavy ground, should be running on late. #6- Stag Night (7-2) lightly-raced 6yo (9//3-0-2) returns from a November layoff buts goes well when fresh, has handled heavy ground. Might still have some scope for improvement, McCreery/Lee team looking to start off the season on a winning note. Spreading wide underneath. EX- 3,6/1,2,3,5,6,8,11 Result: 9,6,3 Real Force ($12.00) took a lot of money and it was well-meant, as he just stormed to the front on the outside and had it won a furlong from home. Stag Night bested the rest, with Laugh A Minute up for third far too late.CUR R5 (10:40am ET)- 1m Park Express Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) (3yo+) #7- You Send Me (5-1) 4yo makes fifth career start for Fozzy Stack, GIII-placed at Leopardstown last season on soft going at a mile, then went to the sidelines after a sixth in the Irish 1000 Guineas. Won 3yo debut last year, gets Seamie Heffernan aboard today. #9- Brilliant (3-1) is twice GIII-placed but has a lone career win (9//1-1-3). Best runs have been on soft going, needs to make a forward move as a 3yo but has a pedigree to stretch out later on. EX- 9/1,8,11 Result: 9,8,1 Exacta: $18.40 Brilliant ($8.40) sat behind runners early, split horses inside the two while towing Alpheratz along with her, and they both ran down favored Goldana late while well clear of the rest. Nice win by Declan McDonough for Aidan O'Brien.CUR R6 (11:10am ET)- 1m Irish Lincolnshire (Premier Handicap) (4yo+) Twenty horses going a mile over heavy ground. 21lb spread in the weights. One RH bend after the first 2 furlongs, then into the straight. This is annually one of the toughest races to handicap, coming off the winter break for most. Despite his co-highweight status, #2- Snapraeterea (7-1) has some appeal after he refound his best form during the latter half of last season. Three time Listed winner has a good record on heavy ground, gets promising young 20yo jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle in the saddle for Joseph O'Brien. #10- Simply Sideways (15-1) is a very interesting 7yo mare. Unraced until her 4yo season, didn't show anything as a racehorse until last year, when she won five races with three thirds in thirteen starts, and her only distant finish was in a Listed stake where closers had no chance. Would need a career best to take this, but she's favorably weighted, goes fine on heavy ground, and finished a close third behind Saltonstall in her last race; he was second in this race last year. Will use those two on top in exactas, but also using #12- San Aer (12-1) as a win saver. 6yo was fourth in the 2023 Lincolnshire, had three good races over heavy ground at the end of last season, and comes in off three 2mile hurdles this winter which should have him in fine conditioning especially for deep going. EX- 2,10/1,2,4,5,7,9,10,12 WIN- 12 Result: 4,6,1 Favored steam horse Chazzesmee ($7.00), which had really improved over three runs in an abbreviated campaign last year as a 5yo, came out of the pack to hold off longshot Smooth Tom ( ) and previous race winner and second-choice Raadobarg. Exacta was $62.40 for a buck, but the $0.50 triple paid $317.40, ouch.Fun day of racing from Ireland, and I understood the results, which is all I ask for even if it was a losing day. On to UK- Doncaster at the weekend!!TW
