Geaux Rocket Ride injured while working this morning. Yes I had read a few days ago this: " Richard Mandella postponed a scheduled 7-furlong work Friday for Classic contender Geaux Rocket Ride. Said the horse’s feet were a little tender after getting new shoes. Plan is to work Saturday.” I wrote to friends in an email: "could be the shoes but I think he has foot problems" Then today, I read he suffered an injury while training and was taken off the track via ambulance. www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/272959/geaux-rocket-ride-injured-in-work-at-santa-anita-parkSo I would assume a defection. Which is a shame, since he's never run a bad race, has a distance pedigree, and Mandella has home field advantage at that track.

That leaves only 1 horse from our Kentucky Derby field of 2023 running in the Classic.........3yo Derma Sotogake, who finished 6th in that race. (18 horses ran in our KY Derby after the scratches of Forte, Lord Miles, Practical Move, Skinner, and Continuar, none of whom are running in the BC Classic, either. ) In total, 23 horses "made the gate" by proving themselves against their peers for almost 10 months of races and prep races, to get into the Derby.... and that was only about 6 months ago. Just reflecting on how putting that into perspective makes one think about many things, i.e. being a racehorse owner wanting to win the kY Derby, how much work these horses and trainers and handlers do, and/or the fragility of the breed, or whatever other conclusions you want to draw. How much can happen, even if everything is on the up-and-up. I haven't fully digested my thoughts about it yet.

Geaux Rocket Ride injured while working this morning. “Rocket is having an unexpected response to the surgery and isn't recovering as we hoped,” the tweet stated. “He appears to be in no pain and is eating. Our boy is still fighting hard, so we will keep fighting for him. Under Dr. Carpenter's recommendation, he is moving to another facility better equipped to handle his post-op recovery.” www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/pin-oak-offers-guarded-update-on-geaux-rocket-rides-condition/

Every good wish I have going out to this horse and connections. Just seeing Echo Zulu recuperating well, but standing with that huge cast on her leg, heck, this stuff ain't easy.

STATEMENT ON PRACTICAL MOVE
Breeders’ Cup is saddened to report the loss of Practical Move after what is suspected to be a cardiac event while returning from his gallop this morning at Santa Anita Park. His rider was uninjured, and the horse was immediately tended to by veterinarians from the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB), 1/ST Racing, and Breeders’ Cup.
Every year, Breeders’ Cup works closely with its host track, state racing commission, and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) in the lead-up to the World Championships to implement stringent safety and integrity protocols. These processes are in place to protect the wellbeing of our human and equine athletes, and Breeders’ Cup is committed to continuously improving the ecosystem of care surrounding every horse.

That high fever that knocked him out of Derby must have been serious. No works until Aug 13 at Del Mar. Was looking forward to seeing him run this week. Sad.

Full Disclosure... if I take their picture, I'm usually stuck on 'em. (photos from Los Al)He looked at me and captured my heart... Somewhere by Stanley Harrison
Somewhere...somewhere in time's own space there must be some sweet pastured place. Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow some Paradise where horses go. For by the love that guides my pen I know great horses live again. ❤️

Arch’s trainer last evening was so nonchalant about everything and then today? This??? Poor form… She is the trainer, not sure she was free to show her hand......isn't it the owner's job to decide when and how to break the news to the Press? I don't know, that is why I am asking. Retiring him is what bothered ME. For a foot bruise? So many want to get into the deep pockets club these days, race to breed.

Normally it is the trainer’s job. Rarely do the owners get that involved (Repole being a notable exception) . I think she was rather flippant in her interview last night with Nick Luck. Would have been much better if she had said that it was a real concern . Of course they may have wanted to run the horse but with what happened to Practical Joke this morning that option would probably have been taken out of their hands.
