I actually welcome this move . In this day and age the two weeks between the Derby and Preakness is impractical. Would like to see the Belmont Stakes switched to Belmont Derby Day in July . It’s not that long ago that the golf Majors changed their dates to one a month and the traditionalists seemed to have accepted that ok.

I never really understood how 3 races in 5 weeks, in the middle of a horse's 3 yr old campaign, became so important in the first place.

I think it is a good change for today's brand of hothouse horses. In olden times, say up to the mid to late 1980s, thoroughbreds were a stouter sort.

Heard there were discussions last week in Saratoga that didn't go well.

I think it is a good change for today's brand of hothouse horses. In olden times, say up to the mid to late 1980s, thoroughbreds were a stouter sort. I think this is well put, i.e. the hothouse comment.. Some people will say stuff like "hey, they're thoroughbreds! They are born to run!" .....without thinking it thru, i.e. that today's race horses spend an inordinate amount of time standing around in their barn enclosures. However, maybe the breed itself isn't less stout...., but "the life to which they've become accustomed" is probably different than in earlier times. History is not something you cling to like a life raft. One must be practical and accommodate both situatuational stuff and reality itself.
