I love the Cross Traffic sireline. Maple Leaf Mel falls down right before the wire. I'm aghast.
I hope everyone is okay, but if anyone watched better than me, or has closeups of what happened please LMK.
I am in shock, I am praying this wonderful horse is OKAY? Saw Rosario walk off.

That was horrible to see. Feel bad for all involved especially the horse and trainer.

Horrific. I'm old and I've seen breakdowns. I was on site and witnessed Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby. Not only does it not get less jarring, but it gets worse as I get older. Just awful.

I don't know if a trainer could get any closer to a horse then Melanie Giddings was to Maple Leaf Mel. Named after her, At The Races did a piece the other day where she would lie in the stall and the horse would lie down next to her and put her head on her chest. A special bond there, and one I hope time heals. Can only imagine what she is going through at this moment. Heart goes out to her. Very sad for her and the connections(all that were involved with her) Sometimes this game can be especially cruel. Today was such a day.

eight belles, barbaro, mongolian wind, george washington (a picture i will NEVER get out of my mind...he was saying "PLEASE DON"T KILL ME" as they put the screens up)
all this bs about trainers and meds is just that the track was SO bad yesterday they cancelled

---she won 4 stakes races before this! Her record is now 6 Starts: 5 - 0 - 0 We lost a really good one. Rest in peace. was just looking forward to her career in general ----had waited to find a Cross Traffic progeny to follow for while and there haven't been many at SAR. nice pedigree for this kind of race and the ones she ran already---now her record reads: "euthanized after breaking down just before the wire while leading in the Test Stakes at Saratoga, August 5, 2023." www.pedigreequery.com/maple+leaf+mel

What a lovely bond they had .

Rips your heart out.Lucky I had my sunglasses because I didn't look too manly after witnessing that.I was on the 2nd floor clubhouse, right at the wire.I was glassing them comming down the stretch. After she went down I just turned and walked away, about to cry like a baby.To be honest,it was almost like a dream.I kept hoping I didn't see what I saw. When I got back to my chair and opened the program it hit like a ton of bricks.I bet PM and would gladly loose that bet for a different outcome. I'm not sure what this means but she wasn't warmed up like the others.Tyler took PM right off from the pony. The others a little slower to go but Mel stayed with the pony to the backstretch.I was thinking that was a little odd but I have never seen her pre-race routine. There was nothing wrong with the track.Let's put that to rest.Could it have been avoidable? That's a question for greater minds than mine. RIP Mel

I'm with you, doc. I was watching from home totally rooting for the horse and connections. Watching Maple Leaf Mel try her heart out to walk was very devastating for me. I too, cried like a baby for that poor horse.
I felt the same when Go for Wand tried her heart out to get across the finish line after she fell down. I was in person that day in Belmont.
I am sad for the connections, but far more sad for Maple Leaf Mel. Just not fair.

Absolutely gut wrenching. I wish there was somehow a way to nurse these horses back to health and a quiet retired life.
