Nice novice here for restricted winners going 16.5 furlongs over 8 jumps. Stretch jump won't be jumped the final time around and it's about a half mile flat race after jump 8.
1 - Awakened. Insane female side on her. Daydreaming (696k), Get Lucky (5/11, 157k), Dance Number (415k), Numbered Account (607k). The Phipps stable had quite a run with those.
Beat a very nice field of n1x allowance last out on hard ground at Radnor on the final day of the spring NSA schedule. Jumped exceptionally well and was very strong throughout. 4th place Modus Operandi was a well beaten 4th in last week's allowance at Saratoga and an eased up Realist returns here. Turns back from 2 3/8, but he will run all day late and has to be a major player here.
2 - Merry Maker. Connections had to be happy about his winning debut in 2023 after a dismal 2022. Race was slow, competition wasn't as tough as Awakened faced and Modus Operandi was second. Others are faster here and a clunk up third or fourth is the best I can see here. I'm tossing for the top spots.
3 - Caramelised. No disgrace losing to A.P. Smithwick runnerup Freddy Flintshire and an excellent Cool Jet at the Queen's Cup meet in Charlotte last out. He pressed Cool Jet with all he had on the soft turf on a hot humid day. Barely made it over the final jump as he was dead tired, but it was still a good race. Certain contender on firmer ground.
4 - Realist. One of a few giant question marks here. Was death and taxes at Far Hills in 2021 in the 3yo Gladstone and won it by 28 in his US debut for a very happy Gordon Elliott, earning 3yo champion honors. Went to the Ricky Hendriks barn after that race....and disappeared. Clearly there was an injury that kept him away in 2022. Made a middle move at Radnor in the Awakened race before dropping back suddenly with 3 fences to go. I don't know what to do with this one. It's hard for me to imaging they're bringing him here if he's not fit. He's really, really good when he's fit.
5 - Barbados. Arch Kingsley and rider Stephen Mulqueen are looking for some deja vu here. Last Wednesday, they sent out L'Imperator, who broke his maiden at Iroquois, then prepped in the Belmont Gold Cup on the flat before winning the n2l allowance last Wednesday over the jumps. Barbados broke his maiden on the same day (5 seconds faster than L'Imperator), then was a less beaten also ran in the Belmont Gold Cup...and now shows up here. Will be rolling late on the flat and is a logical favorite. 30-3-10-3 lifetime in all races doesn't exactly breed confidence on top though.
6 - Solomoon. I really want to like this horse for a piece, but my gut says he's in here for experience and some longer races this fall if he runs better. It's tough for 4yos to compete against older. He ran well at Iroquois and was midpack until being eased up after turning for home. 2 3/4 miles last out was just too far and he should be running late. While big improvement isn't out of the question, he would be a surprise here.
7 - McTigue. The other 4yo. Needed a telescope to see Hoffman in front of him last out and was placed first when that one ran on the wrong side of a marker pole. 2 for 6 in Europe before coming here and faced some good ones there. Trainer Cyril Murphy won the Smithwick with a longshot and looks for his own deja vu moment. Tough spot for a 4yo and would also be a surprise.
8 - Restitution. 5yo import for Keri Brion carries 159 because of his 3 wins over jumps overseas. Has a steady stream of 8 races going back to last October carrying mostly over 160, so he's going to be the most fit here. Brion ran 1-2 in the Walsh Novice race last year, winning (at 2 3/8 miles) with Theocrat, a recent import for her that also carried 159. I don't put anything past Keri and this one will be a factor late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prior to scratches, I think I'll play around with Awakened and Restitution on top, adding Caramelised, Realist and Barbados behind. 1,8/1,3,4,5,8
Good luck everyone!!!
