There is enough uncertainty surrounding the likely favorites in this years rendition to make me wonder if some overlooked horse will just decide to throw down and go for it just like Da'Tara did when he won the 2008 Belmont beating heavy fave Big Brown.
The questions around the favorites are Forte and his foot and the curious forced scratch out of the Derby. He did take that little mistep in his work the other day, has been away since the Fla Derby and has not been an overwhelming work star.
Tap Trice had every opportunity to run big in the Derby and was far off the super hot pace. has he peaked and already done his best running?
National Treasure had everything his own way and ran a dog slow trot around pimilico and barely held off Blazing 7's. So if another horse decides to just set off on the lead i dont expect NT to stick around if forced to go faster than his last race pace.
Angel of Empire just could not get there and did not seem to have many excuses for his good derby result. But he was third and couldnt even catch 2 Phils who was on the hot pace. That was as good a setup as he would get.
Of the others, we have Tapit Shoes and Il Miracola who look like possible front running types who are unexpected and might just be able to make this their career day. Remember Da'Tara had a maiden score to his credit prior to winning the Belmont and then never won another race. Sure he had 5 places and 3 show finishes from his 19 starts but that is just it. Somedays, anyone can just step up and excell. Tapit Shoes is 1 win out of 5 starts. Il Miracle is 2 for ten. Both have recently run on the lead but Tap Shoes comes out of post #1 and has the most speed points in the field. Hmmmm.
I think i am leaning to Tapit Shoes for my Da Tara theory winner.
there you have it
