" it was obvious my knee doesn't require surgery but he did the injection the md i prefer could have done just as well. i told him to his face if i did have surgery i'd be afraid i'd wake up with wrist surgery instead of knee surgery"
Everyone has different needs (emotional, pscychological) and I learned a lot by reading Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande.
I suggest to everyone to READ THIS, there is a reason it has so many star ratings. It will help you figure out what type of "partner" you would be best matched with in any kind of doctor. We don't all respond to or want the same things. This book is nothing short of Brilliant. I think many patients are disappointed in their doctors because they are not truly aware of their own "style" and what the best match for them is. It's important insight into yourself to know exactly what you are looking for in a doctor.
I went thru this a lot when I had my mom in home hospice, and I learned who NOT to pair her up with. Some who would have been great matches for me would not have worked for her.
I choose my surgeons by how "OCD" they are. I look at their desk. I want it to be laid out very orderly just as instruments in the OR.
Some people like surgeons "they can relate to". I don't need a friend, or a teddy bear, I need a highly skilled technician. Most surgeons are not hug-able types. If the neurosurgeon has a stain on their tie, I don't use them.
As for the knee injections, my PCP can do them, but an orthopod does hundreds a week......my PCP may 1 or 2 a month, if that. So I go to the ortho guy.
