After all of the talk of pace in this derby especially after the ridiculous pace set in last years derby that ended up with Rich Strike winning it seems as if the jockeys on key pace players were clueless. yesterday's splits were absurdly faster than the Rich Strike derby.
I have to ask why, as those horses whose jockeys were responsible for that were totally cooked and ended up at the bottom of the field. The only near pace survivor was 2 Phils who ran valiantly. It just felt like Epicenter all over again with the better horse dare i say still losing.
Yes i did have 2phils and did not have Mage in my Tri wager and yes i am bitter. To be fair, Mage is not Rich Strike and his "turn time" in the Florida derby was a major sign i chose to ignore. But putting aside my own dopey decision to not consider Mage, i cant help but stare in awe at the jocks on Verifying and Reincarnate who cost their connections everything with that display.
The bigger surprise to me though was what appeared to be a paltry tri payout considering a $32 dollar winner on top and a 4-1 Favorite coming in third.
Congrats to those who hit with Mage and on to the next one.

Not gonna post my candid thoughts quite yet, but I do have them, and they involve the increasing fragility of the breed, compliments of US commercial breeders, and esp. for young horses, so let's roll the track rock hard like a cement asphalt highway so it's really detrimental to their young still-developing legs.
We can keep "blaming" jockeys though. Who don't have horse under them.
