I know I didn't use him here in our contest, but I used him on my other contest forum as a longshot to win the Wood. (not meaning to redboard but I kinda made a splash when I picked him). But nobody asked me why I did. He wasn't that much of an outrageous choice, when I tell a little about why I liked him (not to mention, as a trip handicapper, this guy got bumped in almost every race but bravely kept on every time and even won 2. He comes from a sturdy background.)
It was the Horse Chestnut in his pedigree that got to me. That was a Mike deKock horse, and he won just about everything in SAF. Bred by H.G. Oppenheimer
10-9-0-1 so 100% ITM.

If you remember Horse Chestnut, Mike Smith rode him in his only USA race at the very end of his career. Anyway Horse Chestnut won the SAF Triple Crown, and was Equus HOY and champion 3 year old there for deKock.

Also, if you remember Channel Maker, the CAN bred, who Bill Mott trained, and who made over $3 million racing, Horse Chestnut was his broodmare sire. This is a very hardy war horse type who won a ton of 11F and 12F races on turf. Sovereign Award Champion Three Year Old Male in Canada, 2017 and Eclipse Champion Turf Male, 2020.

I know many of you will remember Channel Maker.
So Lord Miles isn't exactly chopped liver if you ask me and his pedigree speaks to a very sturdy line that will have no problem at the distance. And he already made a buncha money for me, so I may honor him with a place on an exotics ticket somewhere. Huge step up in class of course, but it's the Derby and over 1/2 the horses don't belong in here anyway. I figured if I was going to look for a turfy synthy horse, I may as well go for the gusto, rather than use Two Phils whose odds will drop from 12-1 downward and I wouldn't even take him at 12-1. His only wins came on slop dirt, and synth, And he's lost ground in the stretch on dirt.
