quick thoughts: Practical Move doesn't have to win to go to the Kentucky Derby. AND... I did promise Hector he's going to the Kentucky Derby. AND... the only way to do that is to get the upset on Saturday. SO... I'm thinking I have to root for HIB aboard the Cal-Bred.
a lotta riff-raff in town for this race.

It's interesting to cross compare the entries of these final prep races against the pool 6 future bet entries... Hector's horse is one of the All Other 3-year-olds. Ran a really weird race in the Sunland Derby.
I see it's 50 to 1 on the morning line. The Army Mule / Any Given Saturday breeding doesn't inspire. I've said Hector moves a horse up by two lengths but he's going to have to improve this one more than that. At this price I just need him to beat six horses to get a birdie price for show in the contest.

ps-i said it b4 and i'll say it again...I HATE THE POINTS SYSTEM! I only hate the points system because it looks like well over 100 points has been allowed to be abused..... ...... by a trainer who was BANNED from the KY Derby.. ...keeping deserving horses off the leaderboard----horses who had every right to BE in the KY Derby, horses with trainers who were not banned. All because a certain trainer who has been BANNED from our Ky Derby has used paper trainers to gather points, or just entered horses to win the cash. Arabian Knight alone took 20 points which deserving horses could have had. Somebody already added it all up, I won't repeat it here. One trainer has been allow to have stolen the glory from many hard working barns and hard trying horses. Make no mistake about that------nor horses who were used up like Nullarbor .......it's a disgrace. It's all about the $$ not love for horses. If a horse doesn't fit the Baffert Clone model, and doesn't have the correct running style, then they will be used for a rabbit

and if not for this stupid gimmick what baffert (or anyone else) did or didn't do would be irrelevant...he could have top earnings and get passed over. didn't you get that is HIS point?

Too much Kornacki on national broadcast. Show more paddock, trainers, owners. Back to track feed.

Those Sunday Silence's are just so gorgeous. Mandarin Hero is a SAND horse.
Did some research on his track. Figured he'd have some serious stamina but didn't know how that kind of tiring track he's used to running on would translate to cement-like track at SA.
Practical Joke ran great, cool calm collected as usual.
Wow, we really can't underestimate the Japanese contingents as many have in the past. It was a gutsy move to bring Mandarin Hero for this race!~

Vasquez looked like he had a ton of horse. Ended up needing all of it to hold off Mandarin Hero and Skinner.

Maybe i am a little biased but it looked like interference by Practical Move turning into the stretch as he cut off Mandarin who then had to shift out.....then a little contact down the stretch as well. with that close of a margin the stewards should have looked at it.....they look corrupt again

Practical Move had another dream trip…. He won’t be on my tickets in 4 weeks. Super run by Mandarian Hero…. The Japanese are so tough and with performances like this and more traditional campaigns, they may well win the Derby in the next 5 years. Skinner ran exceptional and with Sheriffs training him, give me 15-1 in 4 weeks!!!

Agree OZ. The two going forward out of here are the second and third place runners. I hav e them Both from the future book - curious what odds look like in the Derby especially MH if he gets in

Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey were knocking the NAR night league. It's a sand track, basically. Deep, like the Belmont. Guess they've never walked on it or something. I knew Mandarin was for real when I found out he had an Allen Jerkens-like blowout on Thurdsay afternoon that the Japanese kept quiet. He probably won't make the gate but I think he can stretch out and should stick around for the BEL and Preakness for sure!

Note from a friend:
"Did anyone else notice Kimura high-fiving Vasquez after the Santa Anita Derby?!?
You rarely see our jocks doing that....it's far more common that they lodge a complaint, like Franco did in the Wood. After all, Kimura actually had grounds to lodge an objection, but instead it was a congratulatory greeting.
It reminded me of Matsuyama's caddy bowing down to Augusta after the Masters win a couple of years ago."
If there was any reason to lodge a complaint, the trainer would do it anyway not the jockey but I will have to watch again to see what Damascus and others saw.
But I guess this is why the Japanese are known for being one of the most polite and respectful cultures in the world. Apparently, a culture based somewhat on Confucianism which values loyalty, senese of shame, refined manners, modesty, honor and respect for the elderly.
My BFF lives there and says the subways, etc. are immaculate.
They really promote their racing, too.......plushies of Sodashi, etc. which gets young people interested in race horses, and beautiful posters for some of their horse heros. I tried to buy one but posters not for sale.

A friend who was at SA said that in the paddock, Mandarin had a very thick bone and leg conformation, which stood out to him. I wonder if that has anything to do with not giving biophosphonates to youngsters over there?
At any rate, if he and that jockey are their “B” string from lowly "F-rated" NAR circuit........well then.....

I will be heart broken if Mandarin Hero doesn't make the gate due to defections, but looks like they will stick around for at least the Preakness if he doesn't. I kinda took quite a likin' to this horse, for personal reasons.
