I thought it was because he will be on Forte for Derby with Pletcher? (Jockeys don't actually always get choose their rides, right?) I left Irad off my ticket entirely for The Rebel Stakes. He doesn't ride Oaklawn very often and there are some good jockeys (like Torres) riding day in and day out with killer %. |

Jockeys ( or to be more accurate , jockeys’ agents ) do choose their rides . Certainly Irad will be on Forte for the Derby but here we have two Pletcher horses entered , Saez has ridden Tapit Trice before so that’s a given but surprisingly (to me , anyway ) Irad does not go with the other Pletcher entry Shesterkin but prefers the Mott horse instead.

I made my selection before the Morning Line Odds came out
and I must say I was surprised at the 30-1...

Oh okay, thank you for the explanation. In real life I have always liked Champions Dream, I like the John Oxley breds but I think this one hasn't been trained up to his potential. (Oxley bred Prospective who won this in 2012........Pletcher went off as the Favorite that year, and didn't run ITM that year!) |

As an E7 yeah, I'd say their plan is to SEND. I would stick with him if you like him. Why? Pace horses sometimes win this, ie. Classic Causeway, King Guillermo, Carpe Diem, Ring Weekend, Verrazano, etc. I loved the year Prospective won, he was a tracker type runner bred by John Oxeley and pletcher was the chalk and pletcher horse didn't run ITM. But was only about 3-1 so it didn't pay big. (I may have to do a cheap "breeders exacta box with Prairie Hawk, Mikey Bananas, Champions Dream). (Winstar breedings win this race quite a lot.) This race has also produced some big paychecks were Helium (didn't move till the 1/2), King Guillermo (pace), Quip (presser), Destin (stalker), Ring Weekend (pace), Watch Me Go (stalker). We are looking at odds of 14-1 to 49-1 for those. SCRATCHED By the way, Classic Causeway, who won this last year, is also running on the undercard in R8 @ 1-1/16th. (Skippylongstocking going off as the favorite I think.) I made a lot of $ on Classic Causeway in that Belmont derby invitational at 27-1 when everyone I know had given up on him.
He really is hard to figure out, can run 1-1-/8 , can run on dirt or turf.......I'm not sure McPeek has him figured out yet, either. Thats what worries me about McPeek, sometime it seems like he figures out horses "too late".......been watching him for years, at OP........thought he did a lousy job with Rattle n Roll last year, who I thought was a better horse than showed. |

I am warming up to Prairie Hawk. Re-watched the Sam Davis- he also had a bad start, made a strong middle move and then died. The price appears right for the risk. Tapit Trice towers on Bris figs and probably wins but it is his first 2 turn try.
