Sunday Silence ( I debated a bit and almost went with Northern Dancer who was my first love as a racehorse). I have told this story before but it has been a few years so I am going to share it again: In April of 1989 I was living in Southern California. I took my son who was just 3 months shy of 4 years old with me to Santa Anita on S.A. Derby day. Before that feature race, I took him to get as close as we could to the paddock and put him up on my shoulders. Houston who was the pre race favorite (a really big impressive looking colt trained by D. Wayne Lucas, was being saddled next to Sunday Silence, a much smaller colt trained by Charlie Wittingham (and the second choice in the betting). I asked my son which one he liked and without hesitating he pointed straight at Sunday Silence and said: "that one, Dad!" We bet on him, he won, and we were both thrilled. A month later I was in Louisville to watch him win the Derby on a very cold wet day and in the fall I was at Gulfstream to watch him win the Breeder's Cup Classic. I was also happy when he became the sire that contributed so much to Japanese racing.(though it's a shame he didn't stay home). Often an athlete's greatness is enhanced by the great rivals that he or she competed with. That is certainly true of Sunday Silence and his 4 battles with Easy Goer, a wonderful champion in his own right. www.americasbestracing.net/the-sport/2022-sunday-silence-the-star-no-one-wanted

Lieutenants Lark. I was standing on a bench by myself for the DC International and 2 guys asked if they could join. Of course who do like was asked. I didn't just like but loved what I was seeing. Early on the Form he was wiring fields. There was a jockey switch and they seemed to be trying to rate him more. For this race Eric Legrix was back up. Early foot just wasn't in the race well unless the plan with the lieutenant was to steal it. I expected 12-1, getting 37 and had planned on 50 on the nose. I did some math and bet enough to get the 600 I expected and tried a few tri's the exacta I expected. So Mike ran in to bet him. Phil and I just became friends. The race ended up scary because they had changed from 1M1/2 to 1M1/4 .... second finish line. I jumped off the bench at the first one and had an oh crap moment when they kept running. He held on. win, exacta and tri and a great racetrack friend! Hung together a lot, trips to CT a few times. Philly once. Then he met a young lady. The big races he's there but not every weekend. Oh the International was my favorite race!!! Still pissed that I didn't use Phil's Le Gloeieux with Great Communicator.
