Early speed: Artemus Citylimits, Caravel, Go Bears Go, Golden Pal, Naval Crown
Closer: Casa Creed, Cazadero
Form analysis:
Creative Force- Brilliant as a 3yo, went to Dubai over the winter and ran a dud, then has had a limited 4yo campaign. Ran in arguably the three biggest 6F races in GB, twice finishing behind his stablemate Naval Crown before beating him over soft ground when grabbing third at Ascot. Appears to run his best over softer ground, so may be a downgrade given the weather forecast. Grade- B
Flotus- 3yo filly has only one win (GIII) in seven starts this year, has to find many lengths with most of these, can't see a path to a placing. Grade- D
Emaraaty Ana- Ran fourth behind Golden Pal in this last year at Del Mar, then lost his form in Dubai and has only recently shown signs of his old self. Ryan Moore taking the call is a positive, has an inside draw at least and could get a piece with his best effort. Grade- C
Campanelle- Somewhat overshadowed by her stablemate, she has done little wrong in three tries this year. Won on seasonal debut over C&D, then was a gallant DH-third less than a length behind the Godolphin pair at Royal Ascot. Returned to action with a game victory at KD going 6.5F. Frankie climbs aboard, he knows her well and this filly looks to be sitting on a big effort. Grade- B
Go Bears Go- 3yo colt has run some good races against lesser company, but has always faltered in GIs and he looks up against it here. Grade- D
Highfield Princess- Can't believe this is the same AW horse (11/5-3-1) that I'd been betting with confidence the last couple of years. She has taken her turf form to the top this year, winning successive GIs in France, England, and Ireland. Has been around a LH turn many times on an AW course, so she's put that question to bed. If Golden Pal doesn't run his best race and she does, watch out. Grade- A
Arrest Me Red- Very consistent 4yo has improved a bit this year, runs where Golden Pal doesn't. Obviously loses Irad to that one, but Johnny V has won on him before. Can't see him in the top spot, but a must-use everywhere else. Grade- B
Golden Pal- Has never lost a race run in the US, and is 4-for-4 at KEE. Looking back over all those wins, however, this is by far the best field he will have ever faced. If he breaks two in front again, he can do it, but he's more vulnerable to pressure this time if he doesn't. Grade- A
Naval Crown- Last two races were duds, and he's done well in Dubai, so kind of surprised to see him entered here. This will be his twentieth career start, however, and he is a GI-winner, so perhaps they are sending him as a speed horse to take on Golden Pal, and will retire him after the race. Grade- C
Caravel- C&D winner last time in F&M GIII, she would need to find many lengths to contend here. Grade- D
Casa Creed- His best distance is between 6F-7F, has won at a mile but never less than six. Won the Jaipur (GI) after returning from the Middle East where he ran well, then ran a career best to take down the Fourstardave (GI) over Regal Glory at the Spa. Will be running on late with a wide sweeping move most likely, could get a piece if it all falls apart. Grade- C
Bran- Showed a lot of fiber beating Artemus Citylimits at KD last time in a GII, but he's another which seems better-suited for 6F or more. At least he got to ride with Flightline on the plane to Kentucky. Grade- C
Cazadero- Switched to turf with the move to the Brendan Walsh barn, closer won the Nearctic (GII) at Woodbine in latest but would really need to improve to contend here. Grade- D
Artemus Citylimits- Consistent speed merchant drew the worst possible post, not sure how he could get to the front from there which dooms his chances in all likelihood. Grade- D
Top selection(s)- Golden Pal, Highfield Princess
Contenders- Creative Force, Campanelle
Must use underneath- Arrest Me Red, Casa Creed
Got an opinion, post it here!
