I arrived in Idaho last night and had the opportunity to visit with my daughter. Absolutely wonderful! I do have a question, however... As a grandparent, I probably shouldn't share my opinion about length of hair (too long!) and homeschooling (ridiculous!), as well as other modern child rearing strategies... it's none of my business, right???
Signed, Biting my tongue in Boise.

Dell—biting your tongue is painful, and I imagine very difficult for you lol
I have been a father for 50+, grandfather for 25+ and soon to become a great grandfather. Becoming a grandparent was the best thing to ever happen to me. Very happy time watching and helping them grow. Not as good when they go off and don’t have as much time for you……but it is what it is, so make the most and appreciate every moment(I am sure that you do!).
Length of hair? Mild opinion is ok — needs to be well-received, then let it go, you old guy!
Home schooling? Dicey esp if mom is doing the schooling. Has to be noticeably effective in a district that doesn’t meet family standards. Both of my grandchildren were eventually home-schooled by my daughter. They were part of a 39-student faith-based co-op, where at graduations, those 39 students accumulated 5.5 million in scholarships. I attended both graduations, and they were extremely uplifting. My granddaughter started college as a sophomore, and at 22 is going for her Masters degree. Grandson graduated college in 3 years and is head of his class in 2nd year of law school.
It can work, though often it doesn’t. When it doesn’t, the child and family get lost and left behind.
Maybe let it go, and see how it progresses. Do not alienate your daughter and family—it is their decision.
You have been given a gift—-appreciate it and make the relationship flourish!

Easy question - say nothing !
If your daughter asks for your opinion / advice then by all means share it but otherwise stay out of it !!!

You too, cherokeescot... thank you! Say nothing. Tough for this "old guy" to do. I just had to say something and I figured I could share with you guys. Appreciate the Grandpa guidance. lol.

As a parent and grandparent I have followed the good advice given by Spider and Bev. Still have memories of battles over my hair length in late '60's early 70's.

long hair seems to be pretty common here with boys, most that I know have ended up cutting it by high school. My theory, is girls doing want to date boys with better hair then them. LOL. I'd leave this alone completely.
homeschooling - kind of popular here as the local public school system is not great. I'd say it's ok to ask general questions and offer to help, zoom theater/music classes maybe? keep it positive.

It's unanimous so far. As a Grandfather to 6 (my stepson and stepdaughter's respective families, but I feel none the less bit the grandpa),my wife and I have had the occasional question about approach but keeping quiet while being very open to measured advice when requested, has served us well.

I have 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I have suggested to both my sons to learn how to box or take karate lessons. When my granddaughters get older and they are knockouts, they will need to fight the guys off...lol...I suggest you let things work out on their own. If they ask advice, just give them a logical answer.

I can't knock homeschooling. My step-brother did it. SAT scores, Math in the 700's, English perfect 800. His mom is average as far as intelligence goes and she taught him. She had support from other home schoolers which I think is important. David took Spanish so she took it too. The kid has to be willing to do the work too!
Long hair ... Adrian Belew lived with Zappa. A long haired child road a tricycle into the room. Adrian remarked cute girl Frank. The response was F U from Dweezil.

Just curious……
What’s the issue with the length of hair?
I have no clue what the situation is.

When I went to high school in the early seventies it was considered cool to have long hair. You were considered on the fringe of cool if your hair was long enough to wear a pony tail though. I do recall I told the varsity football coach I would not cut my hair to play. So, hello JV team...lol. Stupid move. What was funny was there were a half dozen other good players that felt that way and told the coach to shove it.

The primary job of a grandparent is to spoil the grandchildren!

You hit the nail on the head BTN! Good Luck and travel safely Dell. I have to ask, are the gas prices in Cali really as high as they are saying on TV? We are at 4.87 a gallon here. And it is going to go up as we hit summer? Anybody have a cheap helicopter they want to get of?...lol...
