My understanding: Equibase: "This horse has not been sold via public auction." I was under impression that Calumet was racing him themselves and then Red TR Racing claimed him out from under them for $30K. So to me, this is still a homebred, went to the racetrack by the breeders and then got claimed? He was not bred to sell originally right?
I have always perceived a homebred to be a horse bred by its current owner but I could be wrong . What do other folks on the board think ?
www1.drf.com/help/help_glossary.htmlRich Strike WAS originally bred and raced by Calumet. ( He wasn't bred to be commerically sold at auction, but to race for his "owner/breeders".) If you go back and look at his very first race you can see this: the "owners" of record was Calumet Farms. The same people who also bred him (which is also on his pedigree report).
Joe Sharp was training at that time. His 2nd race, also Calumet. Owners were racing their own horse they bred.
He got "claimed" before his 3rd race at Keenland by Eric Reed Red TR Racing. That doesn't change the fact that he is a homebred, bred and raced by his owner/breeders. Getting claimed later on in career has nothing to do with that status.
You may also be interested in my research on homebreds and their potency in the Derby. I went back as far as I could. When you look at their records, it will make more sense, if you go back to their very first few races......look at Swale. He was bred and raced by Owner: Claiborne Farm; Breeder: Claiborne Farm. Some like him never get claimed way , so they remain with their orig owner/breeders.
But this should be "eye opening" for some ...... it was for me until I started doing the research: You may save this if you wish, I don't mind since I went back 91 years. They have a very high % of hit rate, both winners and ITM. (I did not do the ITM horses, I'll lave that gargantuan task to someone else and I dearly hope somebody DOES do it, maybe and post it up?
?)
I did the winners though: LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!
