GIII going 14F on turf, GII sprint at 5F, and the UAE Oaks at 1 3/16mi, featuring the undefeated (3-3) Shahama. Ky-bred daughter of Munnings has an eye on the UAE Derby on Super Saturday following this race, and possibly the Kentucky Oaks after that.

MEY R2 (9:35am ET)- 6f Al Wasl Stakes (Conditions) (Turf) (3yo)

#8- Silent Speech (4-5) lays over this field based on his seasonal debut four weeks ago, when he easily powered to the front and held his stablemates in second and third. Every other horse entered in this has already run at the Carnival, with the exception of #4- Green Team Station (15-1), which is an improving maiden in the hands of Doug Watson, with Pat Dobbs aboard. Finished third over C&D the week before opening day, then ran second at a mile in an allowance race at Abu Dhabi. Could improve again on the turnback to a sprint, but I can't make him any better than third.
TRI- 8/5/4,6,10 Result: 10,8,5 Wild Place ($20.50) clearly improved from her seasonal debut when third behind Silent Speech last time, sat in the back behind a more-than-honest pace and ran down the favorite by a nose, with Home City making it a Godolphin 1-2-3.
MEY R3 (10:10am ET)- 1m1½f UAE Oaks (Group 3) (Fillies) (Dirt) (3yo)

#6- Shahama (1-5) unless there is an earthquake. One that caught my interest while watching replays was #1- Arabian Gazelles (30-1). In her only start she was squeezed back to last at the start, so the jockey switched her off and she just loped around at the back, appearing to lose interest, but as soon as Fresu asked her for effort she passed three back markers in a furlong or so and was the only horse showing any kind of gears. Picks up Frankie today, who frequently rides for Fitri Hay. That will suppress the price a bit, but don't be surprised if this one runs much better second time out for Bhupat Seemar.
TRI- 6/3,5/1,3,4,5 Result: 6,1,3 Didn't look good early for Shahama ($2.30) which was off slowly and then appeared to resent the kickback while climbing into the first turn, but she made her way forward down the backside, easily glided to the lead entering the stretch and held off Arabian Gazelles while saving a bit for next time.
MEY R4 (10:45am ET)- 5f Blue Point Sprint (Group 2) (Turf) (3yo+)

No original thoughts here either, as #5- Lazuli (even) should improve on the turnback off his runner-up finish behind Man of Promise in the Dubai Sprint three weeks ago. #4- Khaadem (4-1) was only a length behind Lazuli in that one, should also come forward for that effort. Once again, Frankie rides for Mrs. Hay, he's the most likely to cause an upset. #1- Acklam Express (6-1) was brilliant in three starts in Meydan last season as a 3yo facing older horses, but wasn't the same on his return to England, maybe they should have rested him for a while. Back from a June layoff, the x-factor in here.
TRI- 5/1,4/1,2,4,6 Result: 5,1,7 Lazuli ($3.30) tucked in smoothly from his outside draw, split horses and always looked like the winner. Acklam Express reaffirmed his fondness for Meydan, running full bore throughout to nab second, and the two Australian runners ran 3-4.
MEY R5 (11:20am ET)- 1m6f Nad Al Sheba Trophy (Group 3) (Turf) (3yo+)

Another deserving heavy favorite. #15- Manobo (even) undefeated 4yo Sea The Stars colt was highly progressive in four starts last year, winning a maiden, a novice, a French $Hcp, and then beat stablemate Kemari in a GII at Longchamp. Scary to think how good this stayer could turn out to be, with just ordinary improvement. One I took note of was #6- Majestic Mambo (20-1) which was flying home late to just miss against Global Storm and Alignak one week ago. Appears to have hit peak form for Mike De Kock, who is uncharacteristically quiet lately. If he handles the stretch-out he could level-up the triple.
TRI- 15/4,6,11,13/4,6,11,13 Result: 15,2,4 Manobo ($2.80) found himself on the lead early until no-hoper Taqareer took over and set a furious pace down the backstretch. Manobo quickened suddenly with two to go and it was over, and a new course record. This is a serious racehorse. Fantastic race from 68-1 East Asia to grab second, he never left the rail all the way round and got through inside the last furlong, showing a nice turn of foot. True stayer, he's now 11/4-2-2 and one to follow going back to GB. Mad that I threw him out on final cut because I cheaped-out on the wager, triple came back $391.70. Argggh.
MEY R6 (11:55am ET)- 1m (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-110)

Going against the m/l favorite in this. #7- Valiant Prince (2-1) has a good record but he's been handled very cautiously, and they ran him in a non-Carnival event first time out and he had everything he could do to hold off the cavalry. #8- Dubai Love (6-1) was only a length behind Creative Flair in the GII Balanchine in her last, takes a drop in class and turns back to a mile, gets Frankie aboard today. Consistent mare, doesn't win a lot, but is in position to succeed. #9- Ascot Brass (10-1) was less than a length second behind Pevensey Bay in the weaker-GII Cape Verdi on opening day, but ran a big race from off the pace making first start since September. Draws the 15 hole, but was always going to slot in behind anyways hoping for some pace to run at. Prolific winner (18/8-7-0) also drops into a winning spot, may get lost in the wagering too.
EX- 8,9/3,4,7,8,9,12 Result: 7,12,11 Unsustainable pace up front and another new course record as Valiant Prince ($5.50) just drew away in the stretch, next stop stakes company, you'd think. Dubai Love and Ascot Brass were too far back despite the fast pace.
Donut today. Wagered: 42.00 Returned: 0.00 Loss: $42.00
