Several nice AW races in GB today.
LIN R4- 6f Handicap (Class 4) (4yo+ 0-85)
#2- Aramis Grey (3-1) looks best at 6F of these.
EX- 2/1,3 Result: 5,3,2 Lightweight Puerto De Vega (3-1) went to the front to contest the pace, dueled with Impeach all the way round and held him off at the line, with fast closing Aramis Grey making it a three horse photo.
LIN R5- 1m2f Winter Derby Trial Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (4yo+)
Interesting mix of horses going 10F. #1- Al Zaraqaan (2-1) is undefeated 4-4 on AW, including on reappearance at Newcastle last month going 10F. His three-length win in the Rosebery Handicap last March points him out as the one to beat. Hollie Doyle gets the mount for the first time today. #2- Fancy Man (9-5) makes first start since September, when he won only AW start of his very consistent career. Listed-winner on turf, but Hannon's horses often come on after having a race, and it would seem that they are using this as a 'trial' for the Winter Derby itself, and then springboarding right into the early turf races in March/April. One to follow for sure. #3- King of the South (3-1) is as consistent as they come (AW 12/6-2-3) and he's propelled himself to the top of the AW handicap ranks with three wins on the bump this winter, although all were at longer distances than today. Has won at ten furlongs, but needs to prove himself over this course, and against this company. #5- Rose of Kildare (10-1) is quite a surprise entrant in here. Hasn't raced since September of her 3yo season, and she danced all the big dances that year, including a decent fifth behind Ghaiyyath in the Juddmonte (GI). No idea if she can handle AW, but I suspect they are just getting her started again, checking the engine and such, before embarking on a turf campaign.
EX- 1/2,3 Result: 2,3,4 Fancy Man (2-1) just cruised up on the outside of pacesetter Al Zaraqaan around the final bend, went a bit wide but gradually inched away from the others for a comfortable win. He looks like a serious 10-12F horse in the right spots this season. King of the South was as game as always, no match for the winner but got his head down for second. Al Zaraqaan was a neck back of that one in fourth but had no excuse after a moderate pace.
