MEY R3 (10:10am ET)- 1m4f Dubai Racing Club Classic (Listed Race) (Turf) (4yo+) www.racingpost.com/racecards/1231/meydan/2022-01-14/802758So, Godolphin would appear to have this race surrounded on all sides, but as a Listed event it would add nothing to the CVs of Passion and Glory or Star Safari, both of which are already Group-company winners. #3- Dubai Future (5-1) won the Listed Meydan Cup over C&D last year, after running second in this event on seasonal debut. He can fire when fresh, and has recency on his side with an AW prep and then a dud in the Bahrain race in November, where Frankie rode him too close to what turned into a strong pace, and he had nothing to give down the lane. Drew well in post 6, expecting him to rebound under Cosgrave today stretching back out to 12F, and his price should only drift up from m/l. #9- Wirko (3-1) is the other Godolphin to consider, this one for Charlie Appleby and Wm Buick from post 10. Lightly-raced, off since May, he has reportedly thrived since arriving in the desert, but as a son of Kingman he still has to show that 12F will be within his scope. Gets weight from the top ones, but I wouldn't take a low price on him. If he airs, I lose. The best of the non-'boys-in-blue' appears to be #13- Recordman (12-1) for Bhupat Seemar/Tadhg O'Shea. Stepping up in class, but is based here year-round, had a December prep down the road and his connections are white-hot right now. EX- 3/1,2,13 Result: 3,2,13 Exacta $108.80 Recordman was coming but couldn't get there in time, that exacta was $226. Dubai Future ($20.50) showed his love for the course and just smoked them.

MEY R4 (10:45am ET)- 7f Jumeirah Classic Trial (Conditions) (Turf) (3yo) www.racingpost.com/racecards/1231/meydan/2022-01-14/802759Pretty straightforward on paper. #5- Mr Professor (3-1) brings Amo Racing and trainer Alice Haynes ( www.racingpost.com/news/first-meydan-runners-for-alice-haynes-on-opening-day-of-world-cup-carnival/531804 ) over to Dubai on the back of a Listed win in the Silver Tankard at Pontefract in October. Three wins all at a mile but drop to 7F over good/firm should suit. #8- Sovereign Prince (4-1) has been slowly progressive for Godolphin/Appleby, winning a Nursery event at today's distance when last seen in September at Epsom. Needs to step up, but those m/l odds won't hold. EX- 5,8/2,5,7,8 Result: 8,7,5 Exacta $43.60 I would have felt pretty foolish if Sed Maarib (15-1) had gotten up in time for Fawzi Nass, I really thought he looked good based on his progressive 2yo form, including a second to BC Juv Turf winner Modern Games. MEY R5 (11:20am ET)- 1m Al Maktoum Challenge R1 (Group 2) (Dirt) (3yo+) www.racingpost.com/racecards/1231/meydan/2022-01-14/802760Wide-open Group 2 on dirt at a mile. Ended up on #5- Hypothetical (5-1) which has run okay in GI-company at 10F, but he's at his best going a flat mile. Some of these are using today's shorter Round One as a prep for the two longer components later in the meeting. #12- Secret Ambition (7-2) is as consistent a dirt horse as you are likely to find, mile is his game too, Seemar/O'Shea at the controls. Fires when fresh, can't ignore him from post 5. Wild card is #7- Kafoo (12-1) which is a stablemate of Secret Ambition. Two-for-two here, Curlin X Blind Luck (!), gets Buick aboard from post 10, a win today would mean he's the real deal. EX- 5,12/4,5,7,11,12,14 Result: 4,12,7 Golden Goal ($70.30) (8yo) had a mile prep here last month and looked tight as a drum to turn back Secret Ambition (9yo), which had every chance to go by but couldn't. Kafoo was a distant third but moved up today nevertheless. 12/4 exacta was paying $238...oof.TW

MEY R6 (11:55am ET)- 1m Cape Verdi (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) (Turf) (3yo+) www.racingpost.com/racecards/1231/meydan/2022-01-14/802761Not a lot of stakes form for a GII race. #8- Soft Whisper (9-5) won the UAE 1000 Guineas on dirt here last winter, then won a Listed event at Newmarket going a mile on the grass. Failed in both attempts beyond a mile, so wisely returns to the proper distance today. Frankie Dettori resumes his partnership with the filly today, figures to resume improving ways. #10- Wedding Dance (6-1) is Godolphin/Appleby/Buick, easily won an AW race last time after finding herself six lengths in arrears to the favorite at Newmarket. She's been progressive through her five starts and I'd expect improvement again today, whether that is good enough to win remains to be seen. Three others to consider, mainly in underneath spots, are #2- Dalanijujo (20-1) which ran several good mile races in top handicap company last year; #6- Pevensey Bay (10-1) a consistent French handicap-type mare which enters this off a good AW second at Deauville last month; #7- Silent Night (10-1) which was only beaten 4+ lengths in this race and another GII here last season. EX- 8,10/2,6,7,8,10 Result: 6,1,10 Pevensey Bay ($23.30) was much the best from off the pace, coming eight wide in the stretch under four-time Arc-winner Olivier Peslier (only mount today) and running them all down.
MEY R7 (12:30pm ET)- 5f Dubai Dash (Listed Race) (Turf) (3yo+) www.racingpost.com/racecards/1231/meydan/2022-01-14/802762Large, competitive field of 16 going the minimum distance. My handicapping says nine of them have a shot at the top two spots. I'll box four and hope for some luck. The one that I'll play separately to win is #10- King of Stars (15-1) which likes the distance and was a top handicapper last year. The word is that he has flourished since arriving and his AW prep was just a speed test to tune him up for today. Worth a flyer. WIN- 10 EXBOX- 3,5,6,14 Result: 3,5,1 Exacta $155.20 Shadwell/Godolphin/Shadwell, and the low draw seemed to be significant (PP 3,2,4). King of Stars set a lively gallop and much of the pace was coming from the far side, and Mutaraffa ($42.20) stayed on best, in the race in which he finished second last season. Coffers are flush after Day One, but it is a long carnival. Wagered: 83.00 Returned: 307.40 Profit: $224.40TW

Thanks guys! Good start to the meet, two-for-two so far. I have low confidence in R5 & R7, hoping I can grab a few more $$ in the turf feature.

I assumed when sports betting became legal in NJ that would have changed.

That video link is fantastic, Tom... thank you. It's funny how the players whistle at the winner. Kinda like New Yorker's hailing a cab, the whistles echoing in the grandstand.
I've never been able to do it... A cab whistle. Dad had one... That's how he'd call us. I could be two blocks over and hear that whistle and Bam we knew it was time to go home.
Do you have a cab hailing whistle?

I noticed the whistling too. I cannot hail a cab with a loud whistle. I can whistle the entire opening to Billy Joel's "The Stranger", except for that F5 he hits in the fifth bar, so that's something...
