To add insult to injury when the Steve Asmussen horse Ridgepoint won today at CD the track announcer said “trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.”. Unfortunately he had lost the ride to Tyler Gaffaleone 😳

One mount, horse goes to his knees.....DNF, needs a few winners in a row, tough when no one is giving you live mounts. (or any mounts)

Asmussen watched the Travers race from somewhere up the stretch because as soon as they crossed the wire, he walked past Jackie and I standing near the 1/6th pole just outside the grandstand on the ground floor.
He was on a fast pace toward the Winners’s circle and he looked upset and just kept his eyes looking forward. I said ‘nice job, Steve’ and he did not acknowledge me at all. I told Jackie that I think he’s mad and he probably thinks Ricardo went too fast with the fractions.
Also, in the paddock before and after they saddled Midnight Bourbon, Steve had a tight hold on the horse walking around the tree and until the jock got on him. I pointed this out to Jackie as Steve just held the horse close and did not crack a smile the whole time and did not talk to anyone. He seemed to be deep in thought the whole time walking him, and very ‘serious’.
It was strange and noticeable.
Don’t t know if this has anything to fo with Santana not having mounts, just sharing an observation.

I've always thought Asmussen seemed like a quiet guy, but not ever sullen, he'll usually give you a grin and a "hey" if you greet him. In the Travers, Ricky ran a winning race, I felt. Slowed it right down up front, had plenty left when Essential Quality came calling, only got beat a neck. TW

Santana will ride at the upcoming Oaklawn meet, but first he's going back home to ride in their festival races next weekend

I agree, Tom, I thought they did a great job to be second by so close a margin.
Who knows.

He's listed in the overnights for opening day at Oaklawn on 3 of Steve Asmussen's 5 runners, including a runner in a 2yo $150,000 stake.
