Prior to 1987, Hawthorne had a 6-furlong turf course, then went to a 7-furlong turf course by moving its far turn a sixteenth of a mile further down the stretch.
But why can't they have both a 6-furlong turf course and a 7-furlong turf course by bringing back the former while concomitantly keeping the latter?
This would add turf races at 7 furlongs, 7 1/2 furlongs, 1 3/16 miles, and 1 1/4 miles to their list of distances that can be run on the turf course - and to enable 1-mile turf races to be run on the 6-furlong turf course, with a longer run to the first turn.
With a "monopoly" on racing in Chicago thanks to Arlington's demise, this is the best way for Hawthorne to take advantage of that situation.

You have to give it to CDI as a business decision. But as a race fan who sees it over and over...F@#$ Churchill Downs. Their sale of Arlington and getting approval to build the Terre Haute casino the other day (great tax move) is just another Hollywood Park, Calder Race Course all over again.(is the Fairgrounds next ?), and they have the balls to go before the Illinois gaming board trying to hold onto the simulcast operations in that state and deny Hawthorne who is actually running races.(Hopefully the IGB tells them to shove it up their....) Kentucky racing seems to be the only venue they want to see their money working as far as actual horse racing is concerned. (What's that famous movie line..."I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore" Network) F CD
