UK- Newcastle R2 (7:20am)- 1m4½f Handicap (Class 4) (3yo+ 0-85)
#3- Dreams Unwind (9-2) is in good form, ran third of eight in a class 3 handicap last out, only one AW try but finished second. Should be all in back at this level. EX- 3/1,4,6 Result: 2,3,1 Sir Chauvelin ($52.00) turned back the clock, storming home from last as much the best. 9yo gelding had dropped precipitously through the official ratings since his last competitive effort (here in a class 2 in Feb. '20), but down in class 4 company today, he summoned a winning effort. TW

R3 (7:50am)- 1m4½f Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105)
#3- Nicholas T (15-1) has unrecognizable form in his recent turf efforts, but has won his last two starts at this track, including this same race last year. Return to AW offers hope for a quick rebound, and Jim Goldie's classy 9yo in the last race just scored at 25-1 under similar circumstances. #7- King Of The South (3-1) is an improving 4yo Kingman colt with a sparkling AW record (9/3-2-3). Throw out last on soft turf which he despised, but that should have moved him forward after the March layoff.
EX- 3,7/1,5,8 Result: 7,8,2 Exacta $15.30 King Of The South ($8.00) sat a stalking trip into the stretch and had a good finishing kick to hold off the rest. He should be one to follow through the AW season, but he's a known quantity now, so a price will be hard to come by. Nicholas T couldn't duplicate his stablemate's effort, but was only beaten seven lengths. If he can drop a couple of points in the ratings, he'll be eligible for a class 3 race where he might be able to boss around the field.

R4 (8:25am)- 1m2f Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 4) (2yo)No bets in this maiden race, just watching these 2yo future stayers with outstanding pedigrees. #6- Oriental World (7-2) is a FTS Galileo half to two-time Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow for Godolphin/Appleby. #2- Clear Day (5-1) goes for The Queen/William Haggas and should be right there with today's added distance. #5- Nova Legend (8-1) is another Galileo colt, finished just behind Clear Day in debut. #7- Splendent (4-1) may go favored, progressive type was third behind Coroebus first time out. #10- Voodoo Queen (3-1) daughter of Frankel was third on debut, will appreciate the stretchout for trainer Roger Varian, who won this race last year with Breeders' Cup Turf third Teona. Plenty of potential and talent on display here. No bets. Result: 7,10,3 Splendent ($10.00) outstayed three others at the finish, but they were all within a length of each other, so no conclusions to be drawn just yet. Voodoo Queen (2nd) may turn out to be the best of this lot. Clear Day regressed from two turf efforts, and Oriental World showed little on debut.TW

R5 (9:00am)- 1m2f Handicap (Class 4) (3yo+ 0-85)
Might have to watch the toteboard for clues in this six-runner race. #1- Athmad (15-1) is a 5yo with improving AW form, tempered by last two sub-par turf tries. Ignoring those efforts, he's got a splendid AW record (12/5-2-2) and should go well today. #2- Tarroob (8-5) is an improving 4yo for William Haggas, AW record (5/2-2-0) puts him right there, although he carries a 5lb penalty for winning ten days ago over C&D.
EX- 1,2/1,2,3,4 Result: 2,4,3 Exacta $15.80 Tarroob ($3.20) was much the best, leading them all the way around and never threatened. Athmad was sitting in a good spot but faltered turning for home. 19-1 runner-up made a reasonable exacta payout.

R6 (9:35am)- 5f Handicap (Class 3) (3yo+ 0-90)
Bit of a headscratcher, twelve runners. #11- Night On Earth (6-1) made AW debut for new barn eleven days ago, just beaten a neck. Moves up in class today, 3yo gets weight from the other contenders, can't help but notice the eyebrow-raising jockey booking of Silvestre De Sousa. Still, treading lightly in this one.
EX- 11/2,4 Result: 11,12,5 Night On Earth ($6.40) sat in behind the pacesetters and wore them down late, with a bunch of horses in with a chance inside the final 100 yds. Betting error by me, should have just played 11 to win, too much uncertainty underneath.
All done with Newcastle today, that is also a track I will play going forward, along with Chelmsford. Wagered: 19.00 Won: 31.10 Profit: 12.10 ROI: 64%

Race 7 looks a challenge. GL. Not playing that one, too many unknowns. I try to only bet Novice races if they've all run a time or two, and 2yo form seems inconsistent, except at the highest levels. 5,7,9 are all interesting on pedigrees, however. TW

Kempton Park R6 (2:00pm)- 2m Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105)
Small but classy field in this two-miler for a pretty decent purse ($34,500). #1- Sleeping Lion (6-1) has been overmatched in stakes-company last two, but has a course & distance win here in April, and his AW record is sparkling (6/2-2-1). Gives weight all around but figures to rebound back on this surface. #6- Bandinelli (2-1) 3yo Dubawi colt for Godolphin/Appleby/Buick is (4/1-1-1) on AW, needs to improve again today on the stretchout, not sure he has to be favored in this. #3- Nate the Great (6-1) troubles me, last three on turf say he's off form, but return to AW could wake him up. EX- 1,6/1,3,5,6 Result: 6,1,5 Exacta $5.30 Bandinelli ($3.40) gradually wore down Sleeping Lion in the long stretch run, but idled once he made the front and the runner-up was coming back at him at the wire. They were well clear of the others, but #5- Prince of Harts (9-1) went well to be third under Hollie Doyle, and looks like a reliable sort for future wagers dropped back down in distance and class (10F, class 3). Triple came back $25 in six horse field (3-5,3-1,9-1).TW

R5 AQU, Pioneering Spirit still in this off the turfer as of now. Pletch is taking him to FL and thinks he has enough talent for the winter 3yo stakes down there. No idea how he'll handle the slop but if the ML drifts up to 8 or 10 I'm game.
