Early speed: Coinage
Closer:Ready to Purrform (AE), Stolen Base, Verbal (AE)
(2) Albahr (5-1)- Stalker. Progressive gelding brought along slowly by connections, won listed event at Salisbury in August, shipped to WO to take down Summer Stakes (GI). Has already raced around a turn twice, has a tendency to edge left in his races. Dettori aboard would be a plus. Grade- B
Trainer Charlie Appleby
"He might not be the best horse in the race, but he's got an abundance of experience going into it, and also I just think he's one of those characters he loves the hustle and bustle of it all around."
(13) Coinage (20-1)- Early speed. NYB. Stakes-placed (NYB) on dirt behind Run Curtis Run, then moved to turf to steal the With Anticipation (GIII) at SAR in a paceless race. Rank and resented Alvarado's restraint in MTH stake, finished far behind top two. Future will probably play out on the dirt. Grade- D
Trainer Mark Casse
"He's a horse that we've liked from the beginning. And I'm throwing his last race out (a third-place finish in the black-type Nownownow Stakes at Monmouth Park). Everything went wrong. He kind of got himself all worked up before the race. Monmouth is a little different than, say, Belmont or Saratoga. At Monmouth, you have to walk down the track, and I guess there were a bunch of kids running and screaming and yelling, and they had him kind of upset."
(12) Credibility (50-1)- Stalker. Third to Tiz the Bomb in Bourbon (GII) at KEE. Slow on the numbers so far. Hitting the board would be an achievement, IMO. Grade- D
David Carroll, asst trainer, after the Bourbon
“He just needs a little more experience. He will be a nice horse for the future.”
(3) Dakota Gold (6-1)- Stalker. NYB. Debut on September 2nd, winning OTT race at SAR. Came back at the end of the month in big $$ mile prep at MTH for the BC Juv Turf, sitting off a fast early half-mile, sweeping to the front in the stretch in a visually impressive, yet measurably slow final 1/4 mile. Looked like the race completely fell apart, with only three horses running at the finish, the top two and a 100-1 bomb which rallied from the back for fourth. Mixed signals from the numbers, siding against for now. Grade- C
Trainer Danny Gargan, after the MTH race
“I just couldn’t wait to get him on the grass. We knew he had this kind of turn of foot on the grass. There was some pace in the race and he just flew by. When the jockey asked him he just galloped by. It was pretty impressive. You get lucky and get a horse like this once in a while. I think this horse has as much talent as any younger horse I have ever had.”
(14) Dubawi Legend (6-1)- Stalker. Promising debut at Doncaster in July, third of five to Royal Patronage in an ordinary effort (illness afterwards) in the Acomb Stakes (GIII) at York, most recently an improved-early-speed second to potential 2yo champion Native Trail in the Dewhurst Stakes (GI) at Newmarket. Grade- A
Trainer Hugo Palmer
"He's come out of the race great. He ran an absolute blinder. He showed the world what we have always thought of him, that he is a two-year-old out of the very top drawer. I think the ability to handle tracks like Epsom and Newmarket is what they need to handle a very tight American track. Horses need to be very sure footed – they need to have great command of their limbs, great balance, and be able to gallop on both legs. These are all things which you need to do at Newmarket, and if they can’t do it there they won’t be able to do it at Del Mar.”
(8) Glounthaune (15-1)- Stalker. Aidan O'Brien's lone representative on day one. Beat promising Castle Star on debut in April, then off the track until a poor sixth in the Dewhurst Stakes (GI). Ran back one week later and poached a GIII on home soil at Leopardstown by a half-length. Grade- C
Trainer O'Brien
“He steps up to a mile for the first time, but we always thought that was within his compass of distances.”
(11) Grafton Street (30-1)- Stalker. Lone turf start was a good, fast closing second to Albahr in the Summer Stakes (GI). Broke his maiden last out at WO on the AW. Highly thought-of by his connections, owned by Coolmore-partner Mrs. John Magnier, bred by John Magnier's mother, who is also the primary owner of Glounthaune. Grade- C
Trainer Casse
"(He's) a horse that I've been high on for a long time. His race in the Summer was good. He was a maiden, and I ran him on the Tapeta, and I did that more to get the experience of two turns. The Summer's a one-turn mile, so I didn't want his first two-turn race to be the Breeders Cup. I kept him at Woodbine and ran him on Tapeta, and he got some two-turn experience. He handled that well."
(7) Great Max (30-1)- Stalker. Broke maiden in June at Newbury in promising fashion, but has raced just a touch below the top level in subsequent starts, finishing five lengths or so behind Native Trail and Point Lonsdale. Grade- C
(6) Mackinnon (12-1)- Stalker. Progressive through five starts. Sprinted twice in May and June. Broke maiden going a mile at DMR, came back to take Juvenile Turf Stakes there in September. Won the Zuma Beach Stakes (Listed) at SA easily with a strong finishing surge. American Pharoah X Scat Daddy mare. Ticks all the boxes. Grade- A
Jockey Juan Hernandez
“He’s getting better every race. He broke good, there was little speed, and he felt a little tired on the right side, so he changed leads to the right side. That’s why I had to check a little bit and decided to stay inside and save ground and make one run. He came with a huge run today…He’s improved a lot because the last couple of times I rode him, I had to work a little hard in the stretch with him. Today, I asked him a little and after that, he just took off again."
(1) Modern Games (4-1)- Stalker. Brought along slowly, with three wins in five starts. Authoritative win in Doncaster Nursery, backed it up with tactical Group III win at Newmarket two weeks later. Progressive colt may be peaking at just the right time. Grade- B
Trainer Appleby
“We think he’d be suited round there (Del Mar). He’s got natural pace – quick ground will suit him, and he’s got enough experience as well. He’s earned his stripes and ticks a few boxes.”
(10) Portfolio Company (5-1)- Stalker. Yet to see a fast pace in three 8.5F starts. Put on the lead in four-horse Pilgrim Stakes (GII) last time by Joel Rosario, very game performance while fighting Annapolis all the way to the wire, beaten a head. Similar tactics could be a plus in this. Full to MSW Charming Kitten. Grade- C
Jockey Rosario, after the Pilgrim
"He responded well. The other horse (Annapolis) came to me a little bit early and then I had to just keep moving inside. It was a very good race in the end,"
(15) Ready to Purrform (AE) (20-1)- Closer. Showed a good turn of foot while beating a 'meh' field at LRL in the Futurity. Not using if he draws in, although horse appears to have a decent future.
(5) Slipstream (15-1)- Stalker. Broke maiden going 7F at BEL in a slow early/fast late race. Returned to take down BEL Futurity (GIII) dropping back to 6F. Think trainer Christophe Clement (0-40 BC record, BTW) is stuck between distances with this one; 5F is too sharp, mile may be too far. Grade- C
Co-owner Steven Duncker
“Going from the deeper turf courses of the east, to out west, it’s a lot easier to carry speed and Christophe would rather have a horse stretching out into the mile race than cutting back. I’m not sure if Slipstream is a classic stayer by any means but Christophe feels that a mile should hit him right between the eyes. He didn’t run too well in his first two races, but Christophe kept saying he was such a nice horse.”
(9) Stolen Base (30-1)- Closer. Tried dirt sprints in first two starts, but ran okay when switched to turf at KD, then flew home to just miss in the Bourbon (GII) at KEE. Slow on the numbers, but trained by Michael Maker, this horse is just the type to crash the board at a huge price. Grade- C
Trainer Maker
"I would think the Breeders' Cup is still on the table. He ran a good race. He was a little further back than I expected but he finished strong."
(4) Tiz the Bomb (10-1)- Stalker. Took to the turf with aplomb after two dirt starts. Won Juvenile Mile at KD, then was unimpressive while still finishing first in the Bourbon (GII). Needs to find several lengths against these. Grade- C
Trainer Ken McPeek
“I think for this horse definitely the (one-mile) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Turf-G1) is ideal."
Verbal (AE)- Closer. Broke maiden easily in first and only start. Surely there is a better option for this guy's next start. Not using if he draws in.
Top selection: Dubawi Legend, Modern Games
Contenders: MacKinnon, Albahr
Must use underneath: Grafton Street, Portfolio Company
