Early speed: Turnerloose
Closer: California Angel, Consumer Spending, Helens Well, Pizza Bianca
Baby Steps- Connections preferred the JT Sprint but couldn't get in, has virtually no shot here.
(5) Bubble Rock (8-1)- Stalker. Broke maiden at SAR sprinting, won GIII Matron going 6F. Not sure she's ready or able for a GI mile. Grade- C
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
“She's nice. Last time she won and finished well, too. I just did the same thing today. I waited for my time to go and when I asked her, she finished up really strong again. She's got a really good size to her and she always finishes well, so I think she'll be alright.”
(3) Cachet (10-1)- Stalker. Faded late in both mile attempts. Held on well when second to Hello You in GII going 7F. Not suited to a GI mile right now. Grade- C
Trainer George Boughey
"She's run a massive race and is group 1-placed. It's a huge feather in her cap. The mile is probably her trip. She was on fumes towards the end as she covered a lot of ground. She'll be back for a (Guineas) trial next year."
(2) Cairo Memories (10-1)- Stalker. Broke maiden on debut over C&D September 5th. Returned four weeks hence to easily win Surfer Girl S. at SA, visually impressive, running three-wide all the way around behind a hot pace. Appears to be a live contender, even with Desormeaux on board. Grade- B
Trainer Bob Hess, Jr.
“She’s been doing everything right. We were encouraged by the way she broke her maiden and she’s been moving forward in her training. Hopefully, this sets us up for the Breeders’ Cup dance.”
(14) California Angel (12-1)- Deep closer. Just in time on the line in blanket finish to win 'WAYI' GII Jessamine at KEE, going widest of all into the lane. I don't like Turnerloose, which almost held on there, so can't like this one here. Grade- C
Trainer George Leonard III
“I’ve trained a lot of horses, but I knew right away she was something special. I’ve only had her four months, but she does everything so easy.”
(7) Consumer Spending (8-1)- Closer. Three 8.5F starts, two wins. Won Selima S. at Laurel easily with quick burst in mid-stretch, ridden out. Klaravich/Chad needs pace to run at, but has a turn of foot. Grade- B
Jockey Victor Carrasco, rider in Selima
“She’s a superstar. The instructions were, ‘You’re going to be sitting on the best horse in the race. Just be patient and whenever you’re able to get her clear down the lane she’s going to explode,’ and she did it. She got the job done. I felt like I had enough horse and I was going to be able to work my way out. I didn’t even hit her. I just showed her the stick and she was gone.”
(11) Haughty (12-1)- Stalker. DQd from debut win on September 17th, returned to take MSW at KEE two weeks ago under a hand ride. May be a bit short on seasoning and running back quickly. Not a typical Brown move, so maybe an owner call? Grade- C
(10) Helens Well (30-1)- Closer. Progressive in four career efforts. Private purchase after first start in IRE. Maiden win and Listed-race second in two DMR C&D starts, then finished strongly for second behind Cairo Memories last out at SA after a troubled trip. Visually a good finisher. Would like to see Flavien Prat retain the mount. Grade- B
Trainer Phil D'Amato
“I think with the winner (Cairo Memories), Bob Hess Jr. has a really nice filly on his hands. But I will say I think my filly appreciates the Del Mar turf course more than the standard turf course, which is more on the faster side. I think if we can get into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, we’ll take a swing at Del Mar.”
(6) Hello You (10-1)- Stalker. Five graded stakes tries in a row on turf, running close to Sandrine twice, winning last out in the 7F Rockfel Stakes (GII), running strongly throughout. Previous 7F effort was a tough-trip fourth behind Mise En Scene at Goodwood, where she lacked room through much of the race. Looks like clearly the best European entrant IMO. Grade- A
Trainer David Loughnane, after the Rockfel Stakes
"She’s been beaten twice now by what could be described as the best two-year-old filly in the country, in Sandrine. She’s strengthened up loads over the last month. I think she’d go on any ground. We’ve always felt she’ll be better over a mile and she’s just outstayed them today over the seven furlongs."
(9) Koala Princess (10-1)- Stalker. Crushed a MSW turf sprint at MTH, then won a big $$ stakes at KD going 6.5F despite steadying in behind horses turning for home. Mile should suit, trainer can fly under the radar. Grade- B
Jockey Joel Rosario
“It was good. It looked like she was handling it really nice today. She’s showed a really good turn of foot turning for home. (Delacour) told me that she is kind of quick out of there. After that, put her wherever you are comfortable trying to find out what was the best part of the track.”
(12) Malavath (20-1)- Stalker. Beat a good one in Desert Dreamer in French GII last time, with four of them on the wire together. Not sure about a mile for her, and she might prefer some cut in the ground. Grade- C
Trainer Francis-Henri Graffard
"She is by Mehmas, who is a great sire of two-year-olds, and it's too early to say whether his stock can train on. Physically, I think she has the scope to progress."
(13) Mise En Scene (6-1)- Stalker. Won a Goodwood GIII at 7F two back, then lacked room throughout the second half of the race but kept on for fourth in Fillies Mile (GI) at NEW last out. Oisin Murphy back aboard could help. Grade- B
Trainer James Ferguson, before the Fillies Mile
"She came out of her race at Goodwood well and this has been the plan since. It was only her second start and she was still a little bit inexperienced. Hello You, who won the Rockfel (G2) on her next start, finished fourth. Mise En Scene was only getting going when she caught the leader in the Prestige and the winning margin might have been greater with an extra furlong."
(1) Pizza Bianca (5-1)- Closer. Broke maiden at 8.5F at SAR, then ran a clear second to Wild Beauty in the Natalma (GI) after losing momentum when in tight mid-stretch. Pedigree is outstanding. Clement/Rosario add to the appeal, but I'm biased about this one. Grade- A
Excellent long read about Bobby Flay and broodmares here: www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/longform/bobby-flay/
(8) Sail By (20-1)- Stalker. Won a slow-paced Miss Grillo (GII) in last, just holding on at the wire. Three turf races all came back slow for this level. Grade- D
(4) Turnerloose (10-1)- Early Speed. Took them all the way twice, at ELP & KEE, then got caught late in the Jessamine (GII) in a blanket finish. Expected pace setter, or prominently placed at least, could take them a long way. Grade- C
Top selection- Hello You, Pizza Bianca
Contenders- Cairo Memories, Consumer Spending, Koala Princess
Must use underneath- Helens Well, Mise En Scene
