to the best drummer on what is his 69th birthday. Just my opinion but Neil Pert was the best of the best. One time they asked John Lennon if Ringo was the best drummer alive to which he replied, "Ringo's not even the best drummer in the Beatles! He thought Paul was. Any other drummers you think belong?

That John Lennon comment has always bugged me. It was John being flippant for effect, which he often was. He did not mean it. In fact Ringo was a very, very good drummer. Not showy but perfect for The Beatles and essential to their rhythm. Please watch this next video. I found it fascinating.

Of the rock drummers, I have Ginger Baker at the top. Paired with Jack Bruce on bass that was an incredible rhythm secition.
In addition to Peart, Bonham and Moon (and the late Charlie Watts), I would also cite you to the great session drummers, Hal Blaine snd Jim Keltner.
If we expand the field to "Big Band" drummers and jazz drummers, then there are a bunch of other great ones.

'shoes already mentioned Jim Keltner, he was prolific. I'd nominate Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, and Stewart Copeland.

"I remember the moment, standing there and looking at John and then looking at George, and the look on our faces was like, 'Fuck you. What is this?'" said Paul McCartney, looking back on the Beatles' first time playing with Ringo Starr. "And that was the moment, that was the beginning, really, of the Beatles."
