122 degrees today...
breaking previous record:
121 degrees in 1969.
I did my first show in summer school at age 12 in 1972.
Kiss Me Kate with the wonderful music of Cole Porter.
My musical number was "It's Too Darn Hot!"
I was too darn young to understand the meaning
of the clever words and music I was singing...
According to the Kinsey Report,
ev'ry average man you know
Much prefers to play his favorite sport
When the temperature is low
But when the thermometer goes 'way up
And the weather is sizzling hot
Mister Adam for his Madame is not
It's too darn hot.
I'd like to sup with my baby tonight
And play the pup with my baby tonight
I'd like to sup with my baby tonight
And play the pup with my baby tonight
But I ain't up to my baby tonight
'Cause it's too darn hot
'Cause it's too, too, too - darn - hot!
ev'ry average man you know
Much prefers to play his favorite sport
When the temperature is low..."
I remember asking 'What's the sport? Is it baseball, basketball, football?'
Mrs. Arthur asked me (remember i had just turned 12), "Which is your favorite?"
'HORSE RACING!'...as I began miming a jockey galloping and whipping.
As I am singing "Much prefers to play his favorite sport,"
I'm riding and whipping away... it made the grown-ups laugh. The audiences, too.
I didn't know why they were laughing, but I knew I liked the feeling of getting laughs.
I went on to perform many seasons in Palm Springs in the 1990s.
It was too darn hot then, too... but never like this. 122. That's hot!
