Day 16 Burkina Faso Appreciation Day
Another sunny day at the Spa and Mystic Eyes ($3.30) who cost a fortune got favorite backers (aka none of us ) off to a bright start in the opener . Danny Deep Cuts ($5.10) who may have been named after my barber took the second where some of us were captivated by Cara. Hooper had cause for double celebration in the third as Discretionary Marq ($11.60) defeated New York’s finest to give him winners in both the Saratoga and Claiming challenge contests.
There was a big turn of events in the fourth when Panster ($23.40) was a handy winner and made the day for Italian Stallion ,Otis and Phlier Freak. Wartime Hero ($3.30) returned to duty to take the fifth while there was a very sad ending to the sixth as Butter Lou ($11.20) broke down after making his first and only appearance a winning one 😢.
Mr Kringle ($9.80) proved to be the bad guy for everyone but 5 Wide in the seventh whereas Sidd Finch never reached first base and Landbiscuit was all at sea. Bingo John ($9.00) made a quick return to the winner’s circle in the eighth but no one called his number. Lone Rock ($3.70) showed that he’s no lemon while taking the feature and in the finale Looking to Fly ($9.40) put SB West closer to the top spot in the contest.

Day 17 Whisky Appreciation Day
A much better card on the pre-Whitney Friday attracted 28,000 patrons , some of whom I’m sure had Barone Sesco ($24.60) in the opener but unfortunately nobody from our forum. Charlton Baker put on his jacket again in the second guaranteeing a win for Roaming Union ($14.00) and JohnnyBatTBD must have got the heads up from our spotters on that tell . Coastana ($6.00) was setting the mood for the very hot De Vaux stable but surprisingly not a single dude selected her in the third . However matters improved in the fourth when Jalen Journey ($8.00) was endorsed by both Indypacer and Phlier Freak .
First time starter Airborne Gal ($14.60) caught most of us cold in the fifth but Quick Call and Maumeeriverangler had the prescription for success. In the sixth race Conviction Trade was the consensus pick but only Ten Furlongs saw that Forty Under ($19.60) was the winning factor. Meanwhile Public Sector ($3.80) had an easy time in annexing the seventh for Chad Brown to bring up his 1999th win.
Art Collector ($5.60) showed a welcome return to form in the Alydar whereas War showed what he was good for - absolutely nothing ! Fast Boat ($23.80) was the perfect vehicle for Jacckk8 to be kaching again in the ninth with a sharp pick while the rest of us were bound for nowhere. The Big Grey was a popular bail out in the finale but sadly he trailed throughout as Digital Software ($3.60) didn’t leave Chad hanging long for his 2000th win .

Day 18 Mary Lou Appreciation Day
A season high crowd of 38,525 crowd in attendance on Whitney Day at Saratoga only slightly below the number of people attending President Obama’s birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard. 🥳.
Dripping Gold ($14.60) got the day off to a great start for Turffan and TC but we were not able to follow up with longshot Fort Peck ($23.40) in the second where Heirloom Kitten was a double disappointment for JolyB. Not surprisingly on the anniversary of Hiroshima we all gave Newbomb ($6.40) a wide berth in the third. Ruse ($7.70) fooled us all in the fourth and while Stellar Tap ($13.00) gave Steve Asmussen his record breaking win in the fifth our celebration was muted. Flavius ($4.70) was an ideal winner with Flavien on board and a popular one too as Turffan , handykapper, ten furlongs and hooper can testify.
War Like Goddess ($3.70) got the stakes off to a bright start for spiderjohn and JolyB but we all failed the test when Bella Sofia ($10.40) won for Rudy . Cellist struck a chord with several of us but it was State of Rest ($44.20) who hit the right note for Hooper in the Saratoga Derby. Knicks Go ($4.10) was a most impressive winner of the Whitney while the Danny California ($15.80) win in the 11th was a day too late for Bert Convy. Madam McLean was the consensus pick in the finale but we should know by now that the last race at Saratoga is nearly always won by Mike Maker who hasn’t reached his Time Limit ($10.00) yet.

Day 19 Chublicious Appreciation Day
A crowd of 27,796 at the Spa on a Sunday at the Spa which could turn out to be one of the defining days as regards the contest. It started off quietly enough with class dropping favorite Shaker Shack ($4.10) getting home for Joly B. Meanwhile ,McKulick ($3.90) ,named after Chad Brown’s bookkeeper , wasn’t taxed in winning the second. Johnny B at TBD should have been dancing after the third but with Jose Ortiz looking around to see where his brother Irad was , Kreesa La Wrote ($8.90) got up to dash his hopes on the wire.
In the fourth Easy To Bless ($6.40) was first to the altar for Bit of Wisdom while it was boom boom kaboom for Arsignman and Ten Furlongs when Masked Marauder ($12.40) took the fifth. Dream Lith ($75.00) may not have won the popular vote in the sixth (that went to Fabulous Fanny) but Large Mac wasn’t caring as the longest priced winner so far rocketed him up the contest leaderboard.
Regal Glory ($5.20 ) made it a double for Ten Furlongs in the seventh but it was no laughing matter in the eighth when Wicked Halo ($11.40) extinguished the hopes of those who had Shesawildjoker . Pedal Car kept motoring with Con Lima ($8.10) in the Saratoga Oaks while last year’s unlucky runner up Bert Convy found himself Danzigwiththestars ($23.80) again in the finale !

Day 20 Halfway There Appreciation Day
After two days of heady excitement at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Centenary Sale , a crowd of just over 25,000 attended a somewhat lackluster Wednesday meeting but what it may have lacked in quality was made up for with a flurry of decent price winners.
Red Danger ($16.60) was the lynchpin for success in the opener but Spiderjohn after a rough weekend was still on a Java buzz. After missing out on some munny in the first Jacckk8 put in some Extra Effort ($5.10) to get Kaching bell ringing again in the second. Sea Foam ($12.00) didn’t float any boats in the third though.
Rumor had it that there was a Strong Odor ($29.80) coming out of Mike Maker’s barn in the fourth but none of us even sniffed it. Former champ Propro however is looking to take back the crown and is back in touch after Anejo ($24.20) blitzed to win the fifth. Meanwhile Maumeeriverangler must have went Bonkers after Shining Colors ($14.80 ) landed the sixth.
Magisterium was a popular pick in the seventh but it was Jordan’s Leo ($29.60) who roared home at a beast of a price for a Pletcher trainee. We were similarly out of luck when Trinni Luck ($12.80) won the eighth. In the feature Arrest Me Red ($6.10) just managed to socially distance himself from Fauci who was wearing two sets of blinkers. In the last Irad Ortiz finally got himself into the winner’s circle on his birthday pricing himself to be a Clever Fellow ($3.80)

Day 21 Air Conditioning Appreciation Day
23,122 brave souls attended a steamy Spa on Thursday where the only thing hotter than the temperature was the UIC handicapping group. Dafuskie Island ($26.00) near Hilton Head must be a popular vacation spot for forum members as Badactor, Turffan, Maumeeriverangler and our new leader Bert Convy all landed there in the opener. Candy Flower ($6.00) blossomed in the second but was surprisingly unpicked while trainer Mike Maker made his customary mark with Dancing Kiki ($16.00) in the third. 5 Wide saw the Light in the Sky ($20.00) in the fourth but no one found redemption when Dufresne ($24.80) bowled over Cricket West in the sixth.
The action really took off in the seventh when Pedal Car motored his way through the field all the way to second place as Take It Off ($79.00) became the highest priced winner in the contest to date. We weren’t finished there though as JohnnyB at TBD in the eighth Letmeno ($10.00) that he’s not out of the running yet either.
Mystifyingly Cherokee Scot did not land on Loch Dubh’s half brother Amano ($7.90) in the finale but we still all deserve a group hug for some great selections as the race for the title opens up .

Day 22 Sleep Appreciation Day
Friday the Thirteenth proved to be unlucky for most and as a result there was not much to write home about. After our group drew a blank in the first three races Jacckk8 was kaching again in the fourth where the rule of Supply and Demand ($13.00) prevailed in a race where five of the six runners were claimed. Races five to nine provided no winners but in the finale Joly B inched his way further up the leaderboard with class dropper Well Done West ($3.80)
Onwards and upwards !

Day 23 Small Mercies Appreciation Day
A crowd of just over 36,000 in attendance for FourStarDave Saturday but those of us looking to Win With Pride ($6.10) were blanked out with the exception of Forego in the fifth race. Order was restored in the eighth when Speaker’s Corner ($9.10) addressed the situation for SpiderJohn and Nan 53. Set Piece was a popular choice in the feature but it was Got Stormy ($27.00) who got it done for 5 Wide and Cruzan as Chad Brown left the course like a raging bull after a disappointing day for his two short price favourites across the country.
In the finale it was a double celebration for our very own Salestopper who is also a part owner of winner Dr Duke ($17.80) Bert Convy also had occasion to raise a glass as the good doctor padded his lead at the top of the standings.
On to Sunday now where a record attendance is expected as they are giving away a cooler (not Spanky ) !

Day 24 Cooler Giveaway Appreciation Day
A paid attendance of 31,116 at the Spa on Sunday but half of them were probably paying two entrance fees to get an extra Saratoga giveaway . Meanwhile Bitowisdom had barely finished his morning coffee when Silipo ($10.40) ground out a victory in the opener while Sounds of Saratoga leapt up to Kiss the Sky ($5.30) in the second. We were all fuddled however when Social Whirl ($18.40) took the third. In the fourth Sounds of Saratoga found another Saratoga Pal ($13.80) that was as quick as a flash. Maumeeriverangler is proving to be a serious contender in this year’s contest and showed its not just a Gimmick ($26.60) in the fifth with the best winning selection of the day.
Bitowisdom doubled up with Write This Down ($6.40) in the sixth denying New York Supreme a pizza the action. Mira Mission ($8.30) did not beat about the bush in the seventh but all our bets were hedged. Ponygirl enjoyed a very positive Customer Experience ($19.40) when opening her account in the eighth. Pedalcar kept his foot on the gas when Star Divine ($17.00) went bye bye and took the feature . In the finale Mirabell Mei ($10.40) prevailed while those on the popular Amortization suffered instant depreciation .
Three weeks to go and as we head to the far turn Bert Convy just like last year leads the way but there is a sizeable posse behind him with lots of bullets still to fire .

Day 25 B Wayne Hughes Appreciation Day
Hump day at the Spa and with several races off the turf we had a smaller participation than normal in an uninspiring card. The Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard steeplechase was a 1-2-3 for his former assistant Keri Brion which must have given The New York Turfwriters something to write about although The Mean Queen ($3.60) did not have any followers in our group at her odds-on price.
Free Enterprise ($4.70) another Chad Brown / Klaravich clearance sale bargain was an easy shot in the second . Monshun ($7.50) obviously loved the wet conditions leaving the rest of us to Pout in the third. Blewitt ($4.70) didn’t in the third on the big drop down but was claimed away from Pletcher as anticipated. Lemieux ($2.80) scored for Mark Casse in the short handed fifth outshining the other two players. Miss Domina ($11.60) weaved her way to victory in the sixth while crowding out the favorite at the same time .
Before You ($9.30) made a successful targeted return to the Spa in the seventh which was great news for Turbine as it gave us our only winner on the day while Musical America ($5.70) proved attentive in the eighth. Chi Town Lady ($12.80) beat stable mate Poppy Flower to take the flat feature while fancied Fulminate failed to explode. With three wins on the day leading rider Luis Saez no doubt left the track in a Clear Humor ($3.50) which is more than can be said for most of us punters .

Day 26 Orangutan Appreciation Day
A crowd of 21,131 attended a rainy Thursday at the Spa which was reasonable as the weather continues to make a monkey out of our selections with lots of scratches taking all races off the turf and resulting in mostly small fields and prices.
Anna’s Fast ($4.40) claimed the first while Big Scully ($5.20) took the second to combine for a $7.00 opening daily double for those bold enough to select them . Jen’s Battle ($7.50) got our group off the mark for the day in the third thanks to JohnnyBatTBD. Ice Princess ($7.20) skated home in the fourth , Silver Strand ($8.90) plead the fifth while Gold Panda ($3.60) got the gold in the sixth .
Dynadrive ($10.00) was the longest shot of the day in the seventh but failed to make any of our tickets . Vegas Weekend ($7.20) battled back to bring home the bling in the eighth . Awesome Debate ($8.60) might be missed in the basement nowadays but had enough to override the Irish Constitution in the feature. Finally Marvelous Maude ($5.00) stuck her neck out to win the finale to give JolyB an opportunity to pop the bubbly .
So with fourteen days to go no change at the top of the contest and Bert Convy will probably be the only one happy if we get many more days like this !

Day 27 Richard Harris Appreciation Day
Summer was waiting for us friends It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance Between the parted pages and were pressed In love’s hot , fevered iron Like a striped pair of my seersucker pants
Saratoga is melting in the dark All the sweet red and white icing flowing down Someone left my Form out in the rain I don’t think that I can take it Cause it took so long to read it And I’ll never have that subscription again Oh no !
There will be another race for me For I will bet it There will be another Pick 5 for me Somehow I will bring it I will drink the wine while it is warm And never let you catch me looking at the sun And after all the loves of my life After all the loves of my life Saratoga will still be the one
Meanwhile in the contest ….congratulations to Madame Blum whose Full Court Press ($34.20) took the cake in the eighth and saved the day from being a complete melt down.

Day 28 Senior Citizens Appreciation Day
A crowd of just over 33,000 at the Spa on Saturday saw the two year old debut wins of Major General ($7.70) and My Prankster ($9.00) and I’m sure we will be hearing more about these two colts in the future.
Those of you who can’t Handle The Truth ($43.00) may not want to read on as more than just a few good men in our group missed out on the longshot of the day. Not much Technical Analysis ($4.00) needs to be done by our scorer tonight as for the second day running Madame Blum was The Important One ($10.20) in our group by selecting our only winner of the day .
When the late pick four pays a measly $10.95 then you know there’s not going to be much to write about so let’s just finish by hoping that everyone in our group in the path of Hurricane Henri stays safe tomorrow .

Day 29 Woodbine Appreciation Day
Sunday saw the end of the sixth week of racing , a week that saw favorites win at more than a 40% clip and where only two winners had odds of 10-1 or more. Given those statistics there has been little change in the leaderboard of late with Bert Convy holding a narrow lead over Maumeeriverangler but it’s a wide open contest with several other contenders with many bullets to fire in the final two weeks.
Suffice to say most of our group’s attention today was on Hurricane Henri or the racing at Woodbine . Indeed we had to wait until the fifth race for our first winner with Joly B selecting the longshot of the day Baba ($13.20). WrightStuff was on the right track today also when Box N Score ($7.10) outplayed Rhythm Section in the seventh. Dunbar Road was a big scratch from the feature which set up a measured score for Goldandmyrrh whose Horologist ($4.20) timed his run to perfection. Italian Stallion ended the day on a high note when Leading West ($11.80) took the finale to put Mike Maker one ahead of Chad Brown in the trainer’s standings.

Day 30 NYRA Stewards Appreciation Day
Travers week began at Saratoga on Wednesday and there was no shortage of controversy around to give the patrons something to talk about.
After not getting the joke with Point of Humor ($9.70) Turbine got our group running when Casalsa ($11.40) forged ahead of the popular US Steel in the second . Pocket Square ($2.30) at 1-9 could not even tempt Joly B to give Chad Brown the first of his five winners on the day in the third. Flat Awesome Jenny ($17.80) provided a quick win and claim for her new (now old) connections and also had Saratoga bound Jacckk8 Kaching in the fourth. Goldandmyrrh correctly predicted that Digital Future ($4.00) would be a hot commodity in the fifth and wagered accordingly. Ignoring the pleas for clemency the NYRA stewards canceled out long shot Saratoga Chrome’s victory in the sixth but thankfully none of us were on him.
Gandy Dancing ($6.50) quick stepped his way to victory in the seventh and gave Bert Convy what may be an invalueable addition to his narrow lead at the top of the standings. Unbelievably the Stewards did not take down Winter Pool ($4.50) despite gross interference with Tiz Rye Time in the stretch in the eighth.
JohnnyBatTBD was happy to Serve The King ($8.90) in the feature while former champ NDSC32 ended the day in great style when Unicorn Sally ($30.00) in the closer where the stewards DQD another horse trained by lowly connections.

Day 31 Man’s Best Friend Appreciation Day
A hot Thursday at the Spa as we are well into the dog days of Summer although not as hot as our northern friends at Woodbine where racing was canceled due to the oppressive heat . The first race turned out to be the mother of all mothers for our group as we missed out on a potential long shot when MOAM ($24.20) twisted just right for Jose Ortiz. In the second Bryan might not have been smiling but JohnnyBatTBD certainly was after having a Clear Vision ($20.00) of the winner . Cherokee Scot added to his miserly total when Miss Liana ($5.70) won with no frills in the fourth. Salestopper and Doctor Disaster ignored the imminent storm in the fifth to Keepcalmandcarryon ($4.90).
Meanwhile Otis went into his favorite Christophe Clement bag and took out The Club ($15.00) to hole out the sixth . In the seventh High Tide ($20.00) showed reckless spirit to beat the current and finished life on top leaving Italian Stallion waiting for his order for porky (no salt please) . Chad left us all hanging with Union Maiden ($9.80) and Rastafara ($6.20)in the eighth and ninth but Italian Stallion along with Ozzy finally got their order when Mystery Messenger ($11.00) delivered in the finale.

Day 32 Larry La Tour Appreciation Day
A crowd of almost 30,000 at the Spa on a lovely Friday Summer’s day included a contingent from UIC to celebrate the life of a great handicapper and an even more wonderful person Larry La Tour . Many of you knew Larry as Hezethebest, a name Larry truly lived up to . Larry was a great people person . He loved meeting new people , talking about racing , handicapping but always taking time to ask how you and your family were doing as well . He was proud that he had met more UIC members in person than anyone else and everyone who met him was touched by his genuine affection and friendship. The last time I saw Larry was at Saratoga . The horse we owned had just been beaten in a photo finish , caught on the wire . I was disconsolate as I was sure that my hopes of a first ever winner at Saratoga was going to materialize that day . Larry was standing by my side on the rail and we both were screaming for the wire as our horse took the lead in the stretch only to be caught in the last stride. Afterwards as I was speaking to my trainer Larry came up to me , put his arm on my shoulder and said “ Hard luck Bev but I had the straight exacta !” Believe it or not the name of our horse that day was “Can’t we all get along” and that perfectly sums up what it was like to be in Larry’s company .
There certainly was not much intelligent speculation going on however in the first three races where we had a barrage of losing tickets. Otis however did come up with a cracker in the fourth when Senbei ($19.20) was ironically a triumph for Clement over Rice . The UIC party was in full flow by the fifth and were probably feeling No Payne ($9.00) by then. Italian Stallion continued his steady climb up the leaderboard when Bustin Bay ($7.60) was involved in the first dead heat of the meet in the sixth.
I knew that the smartly named Byhoneyhellomoney ($28.40) sired by Effinex, would attract some of our attention and thankfully Grommet and Diablo were on the case in the seventh . That concluded our cashing efforts for the day although commiserations are due to NDSC 32 whose hopes of getting his hands on a beautiful trophy may have been dashed after his 16-1 selection Pivotal Run somehow caught the eye of the the three blind mice in the Stewards Room and was disqualified.
On now to what I hope will be a successful Travers Day for all.
Miss you Larry 😢

Day 33 Kathy Hochul Appreciation Day
A bumper crowd of 44,507 fully vaccinated patrons and our newly appointed New York State Governor were in attendance to witness the 275th running of the historic Travers Stakes aka The Midsummer Derby back to its traditional date on the Third, Fourth , or Fifth Saturday in August. It was a busy day for both your much maligned scorer and daily recap-per as with only 7 days left in the contest several procrastinators loaded up with picks on the busiest Saturday of the meet.
Turbine and JolyB got the proceedings off to a very fast start for our group when Martini’nmoonshine ($24.20) was neither shaken nor stirred to break his maiden in the opener. The MSW dirt race on Travers Day often introduces special horses to us and Jack Christopher ($4.20) may be a name that we will be hearing a lot more about after his illustrious debut win saw JolyB book the early double and put himself into contention with his tenth winner of the meet (Jolyan please prepare yourself for a dawn raid by the Feds after your 30%+ winning rate this meet)
Some of us were looking for a windfall profit in the third but sadly you had to look under a sparkling sky to see Kitten By The Sea ($14.00) to earn it. Races four to twelve saw an amazing nine favorites in a row winning something that I certainly have never seen ( I’m just surprised that JolyB did not go through the card - I kid, I kid. ) The hall of shame of those chalk eating weasels who selected said favorites now follows :
Race 5 Whittington Park $4.30 - SpiderJohn Race 6 Big Package $7.40 Race 7 Gamine $2.70 - not even JolyB could go for these odds Race 8 Yaupon $6.00 Race 9 Jackie’s Warrior $5.10 Race 10 Letruska $3.50 Race 11 Gufo $7.10 - I guess we should give Forego, Ozzy and SpiderJohn a break as he wasn’t the morning line choice Race 12 Essential Quality $2.90
Finally after nine successive favorites Otis gave us a lift in the last by predicting that at least he will be Home for Christmas ($10.80).
“God bless us ,every one ! “

Day 34 Lou Grant Appreciation Day
As expected for Post Travers Day a smaller crowd of 23,285 attended the penultimate Sunday of the meet to witness First Homestead fail to get an exemption from the Stewards in the opener as they put up odds on favorite Moonachie ($3.20). In the second CindyLouJazz was looking for a miracle but it was Large Mac who cashed in with Ring of Fire ($18.80) . Breaking the Rules ($6.60) won the third with an amazing stretch ride from last to first by Joel Rosario but with an absence of rules breaking in this year’s contest he wasn’t a popular choice. Blewitt blew it for his supporters in the fourth with a poor start and daddy knows you can’t do that and the race was set up for Perfect Munnings ($6.70) to give Large Mac a double whopper on the day. . It’s not often you get a 10-1 Chad Brown two year old Gerrymander ($22.00) winning but we all looked this gift horse in the mouth in the fifth where he was a distinctly possible choice .
With a little love and luck someone could have shot to the top with longshot Hail To ($43.60) in the sixth but such are the vagaries of this contest that he was unselected. In the seventh Montauk Daddy ($7.30 ) gave Joly B his eleventh winner to date and Jolyan is now in a spot where just one long shot hit could win him the title. In the eighth purely on a cost basis we all avoided the odds on winner and Beau Liam ($2.80) was not taken. In the feature Trapshot25 turned straw into gold as Sifting Sands ($18.80) in effect gave Chad Brown a longshot double on the day. Finally Italian Stallion and Ten Furlongs moved up the leaderboard in the closer after assiduously selecting Chulainn ($22.60) to make their day .
Just one week to go and it’s still anybody’s race for the title (unless of course you are one of the four contestants who have used all forty picks). For those who have still to use most of your picks let’s start getting them in as you can only make a maximum of 12 selections in one day. It only takes one long shot winner to put you right up the leaderboard so get cracking !
