Day 35 Cristiano Ronaldo Appreciation Day
The final Wednesday of the Saratoga 2021 meet saw an attendance of 19,763 but more importantly for NYRA the previous track handle record of $705m was surpassed with five days of the meeting still left . In the contest none of us were tempted by the Booby Trap ($16.80) in the opening steeplechase but Chazaward was successful in his search for Grit and Glory ($4.50) in the second. Static Fire ($6.10) lit it up for SpiderJohn in the third to continue the good start for our group although longshot runner up Still My Babe would have been more popular .
It was plain sailing for Salestopper and SpiderJohn in the fourth as they both ended up on Lake Lucerne ($15.00) . Races five and six were no flipping fun but Jill’s A Hot Mess ($6.10) got PedalCar back on track in the seventh. Vindictive ($3.90) proved to be the right business model in the eighth but sadly not for any of us. Goldandmyrrh was looking forward to the ninth with anticipation and was pleasantly surprised to see his selection Coinage ($15.80) go fifty and change for the first half and subsequently wire the field off the soft fractions. Former champ Propro put himself right back in the mix in the contest as Raining Candy ($46.60) proved to be the sweetest winner of the day in the finale.

Day 36 Volponi Appreciation Day
A crowd of 20,168 were in attendance on a beautiful day at the Spa but unfortunately due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida passing through the region overnight all races were off the turf . Undaunted Chazaward came out firing ten bullets and added a Bee Bit ($3.70) to his total in the first. First time starter Dakota Gold ($11.40) showed her mettle in the second whilst attracting the attention of Salestopper and Turffan. It was a close shave in the third but Dannydeepcuts ($6.90) did just enough for Bitowisdom and Nan 53 to bust their grooves . Aloha West ($4.90) lorded over the opposition and earned the garland in the fourth for Doctor Disaster albeit not the five-o plus return he was hoping for .
With her second winner of the day in the fifth race Salestopper has made a Boldish ($5.50) move in the contest and with twenty picks left could still cause some castle chaos to the long time leaders. Our group were having a field day and Ava K’s Boy ($11.40) made it six in a row which was music to the ears of Sounds of Saratoga and Jacckk8. Odds on favorite Motivated Seller ($2.80) broke the track record in the seventh and kept our running going with Nan53 being the motivated buyer . Ziggy thanks to an assist from the stewards had the winner of the day in Mo Gotcha ($27.60) in the eighth while Hooper will be hoping that the DQ of Candy Tycoon doesn’t prove costly at tourney’s end.
Let’s be clear if the feature P.G. Johnson had remained on the turf we would have kept our winning streak going but unfortunately due to a case of Miss Interpret ($3.90) we let the winner sail by. Hot Doctor would have been the ideal prescription for success for Dr Disaster and Italian Stallion in the finale and I’m not Blaming You for picking him but after finishing second it was a case of Onourwayboyz ($11.60) , the party’s over.
So just four days to go and Bert Convy clings on to his narrow long time lead over Maumeeriverangler and Pedalcar (who both have one shot, do not miss this opportunity ,it’s once in a lifetime) Or will it be dejavuagain with last year’s of winner Propro coming in again at the last minute .

Day 37 Fall Flannel Seltzer Appreciation Day
A beautiful last Friday at the Spa and our handicappers were out in force as both the meet and the contest enters the final stretch. In the opener despite our focused quest for Mo Rewards ($8.60) he did not make enough wild appeal for any of us to have a bet. Meanwhile Bubble Rock ($3.20) wrapped up the second as Vaccine of Hope proved again to be not as successful as you would have thought in the second. No Que No ($25.80) had the right risk profile for David Brown 41 and Arsignman to rock the third. In the fourth the aforementioned David Brown and Eye123were laughing all the way to the bank as their Ruse ($21.20) paid off handsomely.
Diablo swung for the fences with Apex Predator in the fifth but struck out as Dee Bo ($5.50) was the one who homered . Large Mac wanted to Try it Again in the sixth but unfortunately that was not Howyoumakeyourmoney ($6.30). Emaaraty ($9.80) caught the eye of frequent Dubai visitor Salestopper in the seventh and that proved to be a winning factor. In the eighth Gold Panda ($4.40) was unloved in what turned out to be nothing more than a great workout.
In the feature Indypacer was the one with the lucky coin going back to his roots to select Pulsate ($15.00) . Hopefully history buff Salestopper had a few Alexander Hamilton’s on Federalist Papers ($21.00) in the finale and after a double on the card today is now sitting pretty in the contest where Bert Convy is clinging on to the lead as we enter the final weekend.

Day 38 Star Wars Appreciation Day
A crowd of 30,266 were in attendance for the final Saturday of the meet on a beautiful late summer Saratoga afternoon. With lots of picks being made I thought that we might go through the card today but those hopes went up in war smoke as the unloved Sheriff Bianco ($12.40) outgunned the opposition in the opener. Chazaward came out firing again and hit the target in the second with Roaming Union ($11.80) finding the right gap to win. North Carolina was a popular pick in the third but Nan 53 found a Pipeline ($7.00) to go right through it. Almost the whole forum had Fort Drum in the fourth but he ended up well beaten by Risky Mischief ($3.20).
Turbine is having a strong finish to the contest and kept his hopes alive with a big double today , the first being Cilla ($23.40) who stepped inside to take the fifth which also pleased Bitowisdom. We all bypassed Annapolis ($4.70) in the sixth but Chazaward and SpiderJohn added to their totals with a nice score on Classic Causeway ($29.20) in the seventh where the hopes of those on Trafalgar were well and truly sunk. Races eight and nine provided no winners for our group but race ten may be pivotal in the title race . Last year long time leader Bert Convy was overtaken on day 39 and this year he has been passed on day 38 as Pedalcar , with his final pick no less , moved to the top of the leaderboard on the back of Baby Yoda ($14.40) who was also the choice of Turbine who has put himself into contention with a few picks left. Finally Salestopper with her fifth winner in three days edged up the leader board as Max Player ($9.00) recorded victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup .
Two days left for contestants to challenge new leader Pedalcar who has run his race and now it’s his turn to look over his shoulder but right now for Bert Convy ….

Day 39 Richard Hannay Appreciation Day
The largest paid attendance of the season at beautiful Saratoga racecourse today , not for the racing , but for the hoodie giveaway of course . Meanwhile what an opportunity was missed by all of us in the opener when first timer Magic Circle ($53.00) triumphed at long odds. Sonny might need money and that was fair enough but those relying on Hope Over Fear were sadly disappointed. The second race also ended with a resounding donk as we did not appreciate Sassy Melissa ($8.70) and instead courted a Little Dutch Girl who makes Lovely Latkes. Races three , four and five were synonymous with favorites which thankfully given this late stage in the contest nobody selected.
Indypacer however did get our first winner of the day in the sixth on the advice of his Risk Manager ($9.00) while Nan53 was obviously desperate for a winner and Classy Edition ($3.30) duly obliged in the seventh despite the load shouts of Vallelujah from Turffan. In the eighth the jester might have sang for the king and queen but there was no joy for us as we said bye bye to another set of losing bets. We were all swinging for home runs in the ninth but struck out with nobody even hitting a Baseline Drive ($9.40).
The big contest news of the day was that Turbine with his second last pick of the contest put himself just behind the leaders as Thomas Shelby ($28.40) benefited from first time blinders in the tenth with Grommet and Ozzy also having a peek at the winner In the finale Cherokee Scot earned a much needed modicum of respect as High Limit Room ($12.40) nosed out a victory but Beetle was bombed as he had already reached his high limit of picks for the day !
So one day to go in the contest and Pedalcar leads by a mere 80 cents from BertConvy who has five picks left. Will the illustrious one stick with his long shot tactics or does he have the wit to pick a short price favorite to win and overcome the heartbreak of last year or will we see Turbine , Propro ,Salestopper, Italian Stallion , Hooper or several others who still have picks left come from behind to snatch it at the wire.
There will be a special “Daily Recap - Live from Ocala” thread tomorrow from 12.30 until the last race to capture the final day of this year’s contest. Tune in and comment …

Day 40 Bad Beat Appreciation Day
The summer of Saratoga of twenty one ended with a flourish and the craziest finish ever to our contest in its fifteen year history.
Pedalcar started the day a mere eighty cents ahead of Bert Convy who then proceeded to make the most audacious play in contest history by using his final five picks to cover all the horses in the third race . Tell Your Daddy ($7.90) duly obliged to give Bert a comfortable lead but nine races to hold off the chasing pack who had selected long shots galore.
Everything was going smoothly for Bert as the day went by with his closest contenders falling by the wayside one by one . Bert heaved a sigh of relief when last year’s champion Propro fell by the wayside despite a good run by Alley Oop Johnny in the eleventh .However Salestopper came into the picture in the same race when Atone ($15.80) survived an objection to win.
Bert Convy now had only one race to survive and only two horses could possibly beat him , Happy Hill Lil the also eligible who drew in and choice of Salestopper and 50-1 shot Speightska who was Grommit’s selection . It looked good for Bert as approaching the final stretch the last two horses were Happy Hill Lil and Speightska but in a driving finish Happy Hill Lil ($35.40) got up in the shadow of the wire to give Salestopper an incredible victory and anguish for the second year running for BertConvy who ended the day as he started ( a mere eighty cents behind )
Congratulations to Salestopper on her fantastic finish and commiserations to Bert Convy on another heartbreaking loss after a stellar summer of handicapping . As Robert Burns said :
“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”
Until we meet again ..

Day 40 Addenda
In yesterday’s excitement I forgot to give credit to Tims70Ar , Chazaward, Bobtailnag and Cruzan who all had the wit to go with Gunite ($25.20) in the Hopeful.
Also JohnnyBatTBD and WrightStuff were able to Atone ($15.80) for past misdeeds in the penultimate race of the meet to finish the meet respectably .
Creditable mentions : The following were outside the top 12 but still showed a profit.
13 Ten Furlongs $89.80 14 JohnnyBatTBD $89.40 15 Jacckk8 $87.10 16 JolyB $84.70
