Well, it is not for sure if that is going to happen. The city of Arlington Heights and the Illinois Racing Board ae throwing roadblocks in front of Churchill. Churchill had a covenant that anyone they sold it to cannot use the property as a race track. The city threw that one out. Churchill wants to move the Arlington casino license to another part of the state so it would not be in competition with their Rivers Casino down the road from Arlington. They also want to open a new casino in an adjoining county which they need a state license for and the state has to approve that.
There are several interested buyers that would keep the track and develop the rest of the property for other uses. I hope that is the way it goes. With Churchill's bad reputation of greed, you do not know what will happen.
I have not been to the track or OTB since Covid started. Also, I have bad knees which keeps me from getting around. They are operating with limited attendance with everybody needing to have a seat. If you are at a betting section in the building, you cannot go outside. No one can go to the paddock unless you are an owner or track personnel. They have you restricted to your seat section of the stadium. Plus you have to pay for a minimum of two seats and all the prices are very expensive. So even if I could walk well, I would not go.
Right now they are open only two days a week, three days next month. With all these restrictions, they have had higher handles than in previous years and the limited attendance has been full.
A lot of pressure is building up from horsemen and everybody in the area to save the track as the season goes on. Hopefully that can happen and then I will get my knees fixed.
Hope all is well with you and it is great hearing from you after all these years. If you are interested, a few of us oldies are keeping the Krush Derby going and it is now a website, krushderby.com. I do not know if you were a part of that board back in the AOL days but you are welcome to stop by.
