Ground: Good-to-Soft
York R1 (8:40am EDT)- 1m4f Jorvik Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+)
15 runners at 12F, 4yo & up. #2- Ilaraab (9-2) has won five in a row, but never had the same jock twice until today. Should draw a lot of attention, has drawn some extra weight. Progressive type should improve again today. #7- Rhythmic Intent (20-1) is interesting, very consistent sort won here in his lone previous attempt, keeps Murphy aboard and sheds a few pounds. Big effort at Doncaster last November points him out. Spreading underneath, looking to see who scratches due to the ground.
EX- 2,7/5,8,10,12
York R2 (9:10am EDT)- 6f Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-105)
These large field handicaps may seem inscrutable at first, but usually class and consistency carries the day. Spreading wide doesn't hurt, and the horses way down in the weights are normally handicapped that way for a reason. Using the highweight isn't the best idea either, but #1- Danzeno (12-1) handles the course, never runs a bad race although it seldom hits the line first, and Mick Appleby reaches out to Tommy Marquand today. #3- Aberama Gold (12-1) is one I followed on the AW this winter, always right there, didn't miss a beat back on turf last out at Doncaster. #6- Gulliver (10-1) loves the local course, maintained his form on the AW over the winter without threatening to win, can slot back in on turf at a very reasonable impost today. #8- Magical Spirit (12-1) is an improving 5yo for the Ryan/Stott combo, should move up today off of third behind Aberama Gold in last. #14- Brian the Snail (15-1) has been an all-weather force since last fall, but has a decent turf record, can't leave him out when he's this lightly weighted. With the scratch of highweight Danzeno, I'll substitute #2- Roulston Scar (7-1) which has run well at York and has fired on reappearance previously.
EXBOX- 2,3,6,8,14
York R3 (9:40am EDT)- 6f Duke Of York Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+)
#1- Art Power (7-2) was a highly progressive 2yo & 3yo, just missed in two GIs last fall. Still tantalizes more to come with only eight career starts. #5- Naharr (10-1) is (6/4-0-1) at 6F, winning the Ayr Gold Cup last fall besting 23 others. AW comeback served its purpose, should empty the tanks today. Oh yeah, Brando, Molatham, Oxted and Summerghand are in this race too. Winner will earn this.
EX- 1,5/1,2,5,6,12
York R4 (10:10am EDT)- 1m2½f Musidora Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) (Class 1) (3yo)
#3- Mystery Angel (5-1) has quietly and consistently raced her way forward through the 3yo ranks, with a solid Listed win at Newmarket ten days ago. Needs to take a small step forward again, but may well do just that. #4- Noon Star (7-2) was very impressive when winning easily at Wetherby last month as if there was more to come, banking on it.
EX- 3,4/1,3,4,6
York R5 (10:40am EDT)- 7f Handicap (Class 3) (3yo 0-95)
#2- Rifleman (7-2) was headed for a fine second behind the upstart Namoos at Sandown in April, but he decided to get hinky approaching the wire and ducked out, then in, unseating Ryan Moore in the process. Blinkers go on today, expecting that the Gosden yard has sorted that out. #9- Northern Express (8-1) hasn't done much wrong in four starts, trainer Dods knows a thing or two about sprinters.
EX- 2,9/1,2,4,7,8,9
York R7 (11:50am EDT)- 1m4f Handicap (Class 4) (4yo+ 0-85)
Tough 12F handicap, field of twenty. I like #6- Mark of Gold (5-1) the best, progressive colt shows up every time, but Hannon horses can often need a start before they fire their best. Tricky call. Boxing a handful looking for a price.
EXBOX- 5,6,9,13,15
Good luck if you play!

EX- 2,7/5,8,10,12 Result: 2,4,5 Ilaraab ($8.20) is a winning machine, taking the opener easily from well off the pace, which seems to be the preferred move on the long Knavesmire homestretch (3 1/2F). Couldn't see Raymond Tusk (40-1) at the shorter-than-usual best distance, but he's found his best form again this Spring.York R2 (9:10am EDT)- 6f Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-105)

EXBOX- 2,3,6,8,14 Result: 5,19,11 I made a mess of that one, only one I liked even a little was Mr. Lupton ($33.60) but he was down the list. 25-1, 125-1 second and third produced a carryover in the triple pool, no winners. Exacta was $616.60 for a buck, which is why we play. Only need one of those every now and again to fill the coffers.York R3 (9:40am EDT)- 6f Duke Of York Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+)
#1- Art Power (7-2) was a highly progressive 2yo & 3yo, just missed in two GIs last fall. EX- 1,5/1,2,5,6,12 Result: 7,5,6 Lightly-raced Starman ($11.40) has Royal Ascot in his sights after he beat a stellar group of experienced sprinters, holding off Naharr by a long neck, with Oxted and Summerghand 3rd and 4th. Favored Art Power was off slowly, settled in midfield and always looked like a short horse.York R4 (10:10am EDT)- 1m2½f Musidora Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) (Class 1) (3yo)#3- Mystery Angel (5-1) has quietly and consistently raced her way forward through the 3yo ranks, with a solid Listed win at Newmarket ten days ago. Needs to take a small step forward again, but may well do just that. #4- Noon Star (7-2) was very impressive when winning easily at Wetherby last month as if there was more to come, banking on it. EX- 3,4/1,3,4,6 Result: 7,4,8 Aidan O'Brien had the underachieving Snowfall ($16.20) ready to roll, and she went to the lead and galloped them into submission, which was not the track m.o. today. Noon Star ran well for second and can be bet right back.
EX- 2,9/1,2,4,7,8,9 Result: 8,9,2 Winner Wobwobwob ($15.20) had the best form numbers, but I couldn't get him into the top spot on my ticket. Mistake. Northern Express ran really well and held second, he looks like he'll be a decent high-level handicap horse at the least. Finally, Rifleman ducked out again nearing the finish, costing all chances for the win. Can't bet him again until he runs a straight race. York R7 (11:50am EDT)- 1m4f Handicap (Class 4) (4yo+ 0-85)Tough 12F handicap, field of twenty. I like #6- Mark of Gold (5-1) the best, progressive colt shows up every time, but Hannon horses can often need a start before they fire their best. Tricky call. Boxing a handful looking for a price. EXBOX- 5,6,9,13,15 Result: 15,7,17 Flyin' Solo ($7.20) got the first part done, but the next two, at 16-1 & 80-1, didn't figure for me. Tough day at the office, but the racing was very good. Hopefully the post-mortem will be enlightening.Good luck if you play! TW

Thought that I might start the day with a good score in the G2 2nd with Harrington’s #6 SILENCE PLEASE(who I thought showed promise last year). Didn’t show much run at any time, not finishing at all. Sir Stoute’s #5 QUEEN’S POWER @3/5 drew off impressively.might be one to watch—- or maybe nothing else meaningful in the race.
I believe there is a class 1 and class 2 to go.....

I had other things to attend to today and couldn't play York, but after seeing the results I'm sure I would have been battered again, so there's that. Mrs. Harrington's barn is just ice cold to start off the flat season. I can't use any of her runners until the yard shows some signs of life. I recall that last year was just the opposite, she was on fire after racing resumed. I'll be playing multiple tracks tomorrow and Saturday, primarily York, Newbury and Newmarket. TW

Mrs.Harrington is primarily Irish-based, so we might wait until she shows some life over there. She has picked up a few higher end owners though......

Detorri wanted to ride SP,JH stuck with stable jock Foley. First start of the year but she needs firm. You can always ask about TV runners, sometimes I'll have to answer privately.

Winner on to the Royal Ascot Gold Cup vs Stradivarius. Got two well meant entries at Pimlico this afternoon. Congrats Hoop. Too bad it was in the Barber colors today, but it still pays the same. I wasn't sure what happened with him in the second Meydan race, felt he got his ground and distance there. After Stradivarius stubbed multiple toes last year, he doesn't seem so invincible after all. We'll see. I hope they can get at least eight or ten to go in the Gold Cup, don't see why not as that division has a couple of new players. As much as I'd like to see you guys in the winner's enclosure, I'm hiding Ocean Wind in my back pocket, suspect he has more to give. TW

TW,here is the official Dubai excuse. On to Royal Ascot in June!
Andrew Balding explained, “part of it was probably that instead of flying straight to Dubai from Saudi Arabia we were forced by new COVID regulations to bring him back to England in between, which is a lot of traveling for a horse in such a short space of time.”
