The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club kicks off its 79th Summer season of racing with 7 weeks of the
best California has to offer starting this Wednesday. Racing will be five days a week, Wednesday
through Sunday with a first post of 2 PM. Friday will have twilight racing with a first post of 4 PM.
Three new wagers have been introduced for Del Mar this year, i.e. an early 50 cent pick 4 beginning
with race two, a late 50 cent pick 5 encompassing the final five races on the card, and two dollar
parlay wagering in the win, place, and show pools with a two race minimum and a six race
maximum. There is also a change in the stewards this summer, primarily due to the controversial
decision not to disqualify a horse back at Santa Anita on May 6th, a decision that was widely
criticized on social media as 2 of the 3 stews completely blew the call. John Herbuveaux will replace
Scott Chaney for the 7 week meet. There will be plenty of new trainers signing on this year bringing
horses from all over the country. James DeVito and Ian Wilkes will have stables here from
Kentucky, as will Tom Proctor, Phil Oliver, and Wesley Ward, also invading from the Midwest.
Regulars on the Nor Cal Golden Gate circuit, John Martin, Ed Moger, and “the mate” Bill McLean,
will all have 12 stalls each as well. Martin, who ran second with Mended in the Grade 1 Santa
Margarita Handicap, is gearing that mare up for the Tranquility stakes on August 24. She was on a
10 race win streak last year that included an allowance win at Del Mar. Plus all the top riders will be
here for opening day including Flavian Prat, Rafael Bejarano, Mike Smith, Gary Stevens, Tyler
Baze, Joe Talamo, and the up and coming Giovanni Franco. Top notch racing, full fields, and a
beautiful environment make Del Mar, “As Cool As Ever.”
