duds and others were right in June about him not running again. I didn’t want to believe it but I was proven wrong. If the money guys like Winstar,China Horse,Coolmore,Kumin and Starlight won’t run a good horse at 4yo who will. These phonies keep so many of their horses in training with much worse conditions that it makes me laugh. I’m calling bulls*t on the connections for the reasons given publicly. Hooper

A shame. All credit for winning the Triple Crown without 2yo race, but in a way, we'll never know how great he was or could have been. Money screws up all of sport, and this is just the latest example, imo.

In most cases I would agree but in this case aside from love of the game why in the world run the horse? It would have been a losing proposition for the connections to continue to run the horse. Based on a $75 million stud valuation I believe the mortality insurance for the remainder of the year was estimated to be in the neighborhood of $5 million. Had Justify ran in and won the Haskell, Travers, AND BC Classic I think they may have come close to breaking even but even with winners’ share of the purses they would still end up taking a loss. Take the emotion out of the decision and I can’t imagine a single one of us here would make such a risky, guaranteed losing investment. Hate it but that’s the game in today’s age.

There's a problem with the structure. Were the real monetary rewards ever earned on the track? Not since my fandom began in 99 It seems rewards aren't just not earned they're guaranteed to any promising stallion prospect. It's backwards from the way any fan of this game wants it. It feels insulting on a human level. The skill it takes to race a champion far outweighs what it takes to breed one. This fan's opinion. Change the structure so the racing is where the pot of gold is.

Pegasus at $16 million, Dubai World Cup upped to $12 million so maybe some slight shift? Pegasus worked in keeping Chrome around in first year and Gun Runner this year but they weren’t what Justify is... a Triple Crown winner by a sire whose offspring Coolmore was willing to insanely overpay to secure.
Bottom line, the thoroughbred industry is a breeding industry, always has been it’s just the economics of today make it even more so.

I agree with what pretty much everyone above has said, you can't argue the economics. Justify's accomplishments were significant but in such a brief period of time it's very hard to rank him as a racehorse or champion. he would not be anywhere near my top 10. I remember feeling somewhat similar when Secretariat was syndicated for what was then a staggering amount. Major difference is that he was also a Champion at 2, had far more career races, won the BC Classic of his day (so to speak) and even won on grass. To jump to another sport I'll cite Mark "The Bird" Fidrych who burned so brightly, but so briefly.

"A few pics of the champ from Wednesday, prior to today’s announcement. Looked great, as big as he was he has probably put on another 150lbs in the last 2 months!" Special thanks to Mr. David Osborne for sharing these great photos of the champ!
