I always thought that the last horse in the old gate and the first horse in the auxiliary gate had a small advantage with just a bit more room to their right and left respectively, now that is gone. The outside horses now will be just a bit closer to the rail, not enough to make a big difference. There is some perceived big improvement, maybe someone else can explain it.
I do believe that they are leaving stall 1 and stall 20 open for the 18 horse field.
