York 8:55- 1m6f Silver Cup Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+)
#3- Moonlight Spirit (2-1) didn't care for the 2 1/2 mi. distance or the soft ground last time, and wasn't ever going to beat Stradivarius even if he did; drops back into a winning spot.
EX- 3/1,4,5 Result- 2,1,5 Eagles By Day ($28.40) seemed to like the added distance, as Danny Tudhope was the last one to ask his mount and he fired home just ahead of Communique. Moonlight Spirit set a moderate pace but tired badly when the real running began.
Newbury 9:15- 6f Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (2yo)
#5- Method (Even) was an impressive winner on debut over Fev Rover, and that one returned to just miss against Dandalla in a GII. #6- Mighty Gurkha (6-1) was a good fifth to Tactical at Royal Ascot; that race has produced several next out winners.
EX- 5,6/4,5,6,7 Result- 5,6,3 Exacta $14.80 Method ($3.40) got tow-roped into the race by Mighty Gurkha and drew off smartly, franking the form of his debut race.
York 9:30- 1m2½f John Smith's Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+)
Field of 22 accomplished middle-distance handicappers going 10F*. My preference is for #11- Solid Stone (6-1). Been waiting for him to run back after he dispatched a good field at Sandown in June. Stretches out of that effort and is more than fairly weighted.
WIN- 11 EXBOX- 2,5,11,12 Result- 20,7,5 Sinjaari ($24.60) took full advantage of his light impost as Haggas had him ready to go from a long layoff. Solid Stone was held up in last and had too much to do late. Great race, at the 2 furlong marker they were a fifteen-wide across the track.
Newbury 9:50- 1m (Str) British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-100)
#4- Huboor (4-1) was only beaten 3 1/2 lengths in the Sandringham S. at Royal Ascot, should come on for that effort and meets easier foes today.
EX- 4/2,5,6 Result- 1,6,4 Festive Star ($32.80) sprang the upset as Huboor could only manage third after being the first one to play her cards inside the finishing grounds.
York 10:05- 5f City Walls Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo+)
Nine quality speedballs line up with #2- Equilateral (5-2) most preferred. Second to Battaash in the Kings Stand (GI) at Royal Ascot. #7- Que Amoro (4-1) is a fine alternative to the favorite, 4yo filly is in top form and record at the distance (11/5-2-2) is sparkling. Trainer Michael Dods does his best work with sprinters.
EX- 2,7/1,2,4,5,7,9 Result- 5,9,7 Moss Gill ($16.40) provided Tudhope with another victory. Equilateral didn't have a clean run trapped along the running rail behind horses.
Newbury 10:25- 1m4f Aphrodite Fillies' Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo+)
Going against the grain with #2- Hyanna (10-1) is a fine handicapper, and off her return victory at Royal Windsor she has earned a shot at some Black type. #3- La Lune (5-1) is a lightly-raced Champs Elysees filly who just got beat against Antonia de Vega in stakes at Pontefract on reappearance; sky's the limit for this one.
EX- 2,3/2,3,4,8,9 Result- 9,10,4 Cabaletta ($30.00) continued the parade of longshots, and also continued her progressive rise into stakes company. She beat Frankly Darling on debut last fall, and was second to Franconia upon reappearance in June. The clues were there.
Newbury 11:00- 6f Hackwood Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo+)
Wide open GIII sprint with 12 runners. #6- Tabdeed (6-1) 5yo hasn't done much wrong in seven career starts, just can't seem to stay on the track. Comeback second on Tapeta surface at Newcastle should have this one ready to fire its best shot. #12- Repartee (5-1) 3yo colt won the Carnarvon S. at Royal Windsor on seasonal debut. Ran against some top 2yos in his brief campaign last year.
EX- 6,12/5,6,8,10,12 Result- 6,7,4 Tabdeed (4-1) made the last move the winning move, firing up the stands side to catch The Tin Man nearing the wire. I failed to use favored The Tin Man because, well, I'm an idiot.
Good luck if you play today.
