R2- MAIDEN CLAIMING $75,000 For Maidens, Three Years Old And Upward. One And One Sixteenth Miles. (Turf)
#6- Eternal Summer (5-1) long layoff, but Pletcher excels at bringing them back ready. Surprising to see him dropped into MC ranks already, could just be a smokescreen. Third place finish behind BCJuvT winner Structor over C&D last August points to his potential. #7- Magic Mojo (10-1) had trouble in his debut, but Jerkens rarely cranks them up first time out. Finished with some interest, and the stretchout to two turns makes him a player today. Drop to claimer a bit dangerous for $350K son of Uncle Mo. #3- Price Talk (12-1) debuts for Klaravich Stables and...Jorge Abreu. Interesting. Son of Kitten's Joy has been training here for a month and Abreu has good turf stats all around, and with FTS. #10- Scanno (8-1) runs his race every time. Unfortunately, that race is typically for 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Actually, was only a length behind Eternal Summer last summer in the Structor race, he just hasn't improved much from that point.
EX- 6,7/3,6,7,10 Result- 6,10,7 Exacta $24.20 Price Talk was ready to run first out and was much the best, but hapless turf rider Manny Franco (6%) smacked him left-handed twice and the colt veered left hard and clobbered Magic Mojo. Stewards had to take him down, but Franco may not get days because it was a firster shying from the whip. Bet Manny on the dirt...turf,umm, no. Eternal Summer ($12.00) got elevated to the win, as they put Price Talk fifth.
R5- ALLOWANCE (N2X) OPTIONAL CLAIMING $40,000 For Three Year Olds And Upward Foaled In New York State. Six Furlongs.
#5- Dark Money (9-5) has a win over C&D last summer, and comes into this off a big win in an open-company N1X. Has been progressive since Rodriguez claimed him for Dubb and partners, with four wins and a second. Only reason to risk him for a tag today would be that Dubb really wants to win the owner's title this year at all costs. I'd claim him. #7- Thorny Tale (5-1) was a NYB-stakes-quality sprinter last year before getting sidelined after Saratoga. Comeback race was his best yet, destroying a field of twelve first-level NYB allowance foes in the slop. His two fast-dirt races are good. Taking an optimistic view, hoping he doesn't bounce off the last one. Weaver might have a really good one here. Kazmania, Leaky Cup and The Caretaker have taken turns knocking heads and are about the same to me, consistent hard-knocking sprinters. The Caretaker is a HFTC (4/2-1-0) and is also, surprisingly, in for a tag today.
EX- 5,7/3,5,7,8 Result- 4,8,6 Big Engine ($28.80) sure has one. I couldn't figure out why Rice sent him to FL for most of last year, until they closed and he had to come back to AQU. I think it's because FL offers 5 1/2F races, which he won every time, but failed in the 6F races. He just ran out of gas late at six. The two AQU races showed he had improved a bit, and many of his erstwhile competitors had headed for warmer climates. She sure had him cranked off the six-month break.
R7- ALLOWANCE (N1X) For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward Foaled In New York State. One And One Sixteenth Miles. (Turf)
#1- Astoria Kitten (2-1) 3yo filly tried stakes-company twice, at AQU in the fall and at GP in May, showing speed and tiring late without being embarrassed in either race. Same story last out going a mile at BEL. Search for the right jockey turns to Irad today, never a bad thing. Not a lot of other early speed signed up for this, so she should be in front at the top of the stretch. #9- Summer At the Spa (9-2) 3yo filly is a deep closer making her second start for Thomas after heading Astoria Kitten at the wire in a race with a withering pace. Probably won't get that help today, Castellano takes over the steering, a little extra ground won't hurt. #5- Marquet Legacy (8-1) was turned over to Hennig, from Clement, after a very progressive but limited 3yo season. First start in new barn was ok, a fifth in the same June BEL race as above, so she should be better for that run. Johnny V. sticks around. Pedigree Special: Dam (To Marquet) has produced six offspring that each won $200K+, including millionaire GI-winner Discreet Marq (by Discreet Cat) .
EX- 1,9/1,5,6,8,9 WP- 5 Result- 3,1,9 I felt that Pecatonica ($25.00) was off form, but maybe Bush didn't have her primed last time off the long layoff. She blew right past the rest of them, and I don't think she'll be back in for a N3L anytime soon. Astoria Kitten, true to form, was "speed and tired late" again. Marquet Legacy got a very uninspiring ride from Velazquez, but maybe there's a reason she's no longer in the Clement barn.
R9- STAKES Peter Pan S.- GIII Purse $100,000. For Three Year Olds. One And One Eighth Miles.
#2- Country Grammer (3-1) broke his maiden going 9F at AQU as a 2yo, then ran mid-pack in the Fountain of Youth on 3yo debut. Reappeared in a solid N1X at BEL last month, finishing third just behind #6- Mystic Guide and good-looking runaway winner Tap It To Win, who subsequently ran fifth in the Belmont Stakes. Should improve for that effort and be a major player today. #3- Modernist (5-2) improved quickly at AQU once stretched out around two turns by Mott. Headed to FG and won a division of the Risen Star (GII) before finishing third in the Louisiana Derby (GII) there. Didn't show much interest in the Belmont Stakes (GI) which was a very long one-turn race. Drop in class and a slower pace may help him. #7- Caracaro (15-1) is a pure faith play. Delgado has shipped some Florida speedballs up north and won with them before (Paola Queen- 2016 Test S.- GI), so despite the maiden-win only, the January layoff and the brief resume total, I have to respect this horse at a big price, hopefully.
EX- 2,3/2,3,5,6,7 WP- 7 Result- 2,7,6 Exacta $20.20 Place $6.75 Trip made all the difference as Country Grammer ($10.20) waited for a gaping hole to open on the rail at the top of the stretch, while Javy was taking the overland route on Caracaro in the five path. It looked like a pretty significant bump occurred around the 1/16 pole, caused by the winner, but the stewards didn't look, and surpringly, in a stakes race on a Florida shipper, Castellano didn't object. Weird.
R10- CLAIMING $40,000 (N2L) For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward. Five And One Half Furlongs. (Turf)
Last race of the day, expect chaos and tread lightly.
EXBOX- 1,11,13 Result- 1,11,4 Exacta $23.00 Longshot Grudge looked home free in mid-stretch, but Jose Ortiz had other ideas, slicing his way between horses and just getting up in time for Shug on Secure Connection ($5.80). Aunt Nadine nostrilized Grudge as well, and the exacta was quite good for a 9-5 on top.
