Going: SOFT (Overall 6.0; Stands' side 6.3; Centre 6.0; Far side 5.9) (Sunny)
9:25- 6f (July) Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) (Class 1) (2yo) 4,6,9 are non-runners. Field of 7.
#2- Dandalla (3-2) is the deserving favorite after her six-length win in what seemed to be a solid field in the Albany S. (GIII) over soft ground at Royal Ascot. #10- Time Scale (5-2) has two wins in three tries including a small stakes over C&D last out. Handled soft going in her maiden win. The others need to step up measurably, but they are 2yos.
EX- 2,10/2,5,8,10 Result- 2,3,7 Dandalla ($3.60) got home, but just barely. Fev Rover was an unlucky second and would've been ahead in another two jumps. Another longshot, Santosha was closing fast for third. If you played the triple 2/all/all you got $362.20 for a buck. Wish I'd thought of that.
10:00- 1m6f (July) Heritage Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+) 5,9,13 are non-runners. Field of 14.
#12- Holy Kingdom (3-1) improved significantly when stretched out to this distance last fall, and continued to progress with a nice C&D win last month. Newmarket record is 5/2-2-0 so he likes it here. Has handled soft previously. #15- Severance (15-1) was only 1 3/4 lengths behind Holy Kingdom upon reappearance going 12F here. Followed that up with another second in a class 2 at Royal Windsor. Ground should suit, and as a son of Nathaniel I'm not worried about him getting the longer distance. #1- King's Advice (15-1) won this race last year, and was second at Doncaster two back going roughly this distance. They've been experimenting with him at Cup distances (2 mi. +) but that seems to overextend him. Chance now dropped back in trip.
EX- 12,15/1,4,11,12,15 Result- 16,4,10 A slow-early/fast-late race, where the closers stood no chance. Good job by Dettori sitting up close, in behind the leader with Cape Coast ($13.40), then using the rail to keep his mount straight on to the line. Trifecta (5-1, 13-1, 49-1) paid $2347.10 for a dollar.
10:35- 1m2f (July) Heritage Handicap (Class 2) (3yo) (0-105) 9,10 are non-runners. Field of 11.
#4- Global Storm (6-1) hasn't missed the board in six tries (6/2-2-2). Very progressive, with last a close third to Highland Chief in a Royal Ascot stakes at this distance over testing ground. #11- Kipps (9-2) also has a sterling record (4/1-3-0). Last out beaten a neck in the King George V S. at Royal Ascot. That was 12f, but has an AW win and turf second at 10F so no concerns there.
EX- 4,11/2,3,4,11,13 Result: 12,5,13 Yet another slow-paced race that favored forwardly poitioned horses, save for one. The winner Zabeel Champion ($19.00) led them on a merry chase and was in front nearly the entire trip. He won over C&D last month in a Class 4, but it was hard to see this effort coming. The horse who ran by far the best race was second-place Man of the Night (47-1) which was dead last three furlongs out and relentlessly closed as the clear runner-up. He's a future bet-back, but maybe not next time as his value will be gone. Trifecta paid $1653.00 for a buck.
11:10- 1m (July) Falmouth Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) (3yo+) 3 (Magic Wand) is a non-runner. Field of 6.
Elite field of six each of whom can make a claim for the top spot. I'm taking a stand with #5- One Master (7-2) from the William Haggas yard/Lael Stable. He tried turning her back to sprint distances with mixed results, mostly good, in the second half of last year after a second in this event. Handles heavy ground. Haggas reaches out to top French jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot to ride her once again. Ideally I think she's best at 7F, but is versatile enough to move a furlong up or down and still hold her class. At best she should be third in the odds, and could offer a spot of value in a short field. Betting aside, this is a race to watch.
Large EX- 5/All Result- 4,2,6,(5) Nazeef ($9.00) moved her record to 5/4-0-1 on turf as she just got up in a thrilling race where the top four were separated by one length. Second place Billesdon Brook was let go at 13-1, which is a crime for a former Guineas winner, who also won a GI over C&D last October. The exacta ($63.60) is going to make me pound my head against the wall. One Master ran well but the uphill final furlong really blunted her run, especially in a slow-early/fast-late race.
Good luck today!
