Sandown 9:05- 7f Handicap (Class 2) (3yo) (0-105) Trying to beat favored #8- Ascension (5-2) who has shown promise but looks to want more distance. #1- Well of Wisdom (3-1) has three wins in eight tries. Ran well against Helter Skelter, Earthlight and Alson in France and Germany last summer, any of which would be odds-on in here. Two Turf tries in Dubai in February gives him a conditioning edge perhaps. #4- Oh Purple Reign (15-1) was found wanting in Group company, but overall is a consistent turf performer. Probably up against it at 7F, but the price will be right. #5- Sesame Birah (15-1) on the other hand loves 7F, just missed the frame in a GIII at Deauville last July. Had an AW prep at Kempton last week. #7- Tomfre (10-1) is 7/4-0-1 on grass and ran with some good ones as a 2yo. AW prep at Lingfield a week ago.
EX- 1,5/1,4,5,7 Result: 1,7,8 Exacta $40.20 Well of Wisdom (3-1) nearly put Surf Dancer through the rail near the finish, but gets the win by a nose over fast-closing Tomfre.
Newbury 9:25- 7f (Str) Fillies' Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo+) #1,2,6 are withdrawn. Fairly evenly matched group, so #3- Farzeen (7-1) may have room for growth after only five starts. Didn't run a lick on soft ground last fall, so draw a line through it. #7- Miss Celestial (7-1) was very consistent as a 3yo and prepped beautifully for this, running very close-up to Liberty Beach in a 6F race at Haydock last Sunday. All systems go.
EX- 7/3,4,8 Result: 8,7,9 #8- Mubtasimah was too good for them, her win was never in doubt. Miss Celestial stayed on well for second.
Sandown 9:40- 5f Scurry Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo) Select field of seven speedballs. Looking for a little value with #5- Al Raya (7-2) who took a GIII in France when last seen, and #2- Lazuli (3-1) who is two-of-four lifetime with a good second at Newmarket last week.
EX- 2,5/1,2,3,5,7 Result: 2,4,1 Lazuli (6-5) made the rest look slow with a brilliant win. Bad move on my part to leave out second-place finisher Keep Busy (15-1) which was very progressive last year and had a prep for this in an AW GIII last week.
Newbury 10:00- 1m2f Abingdon Fillies' Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo) #3,5 have been withdrawn. Lightly-raced group of 3yo fillies going 1 1/4mi. Big favorite is a scratch, so I'll just box a few including #9- Wonderful Tonight (12-1) which owns a win at the distance over heavy ground in France to end last term.
EXBOX- 1,2,9 Result: 4,1,2 Franconia (Even) quickened when asked by Dettori and held them safe easily. Daughter of Frankel has a future, stay tuned.
Sandown 10:15- 1m Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+) (0-100) #1- Elegant Light (7-1) makes her first start on British soil, would prefer more cut in the ground, but had two open length wins in France last term. #2- Solid Stone (3-1) was progressive as a 3yo and found his best at the end of last season. William Buick answers the call for Sir Michael Stoute. #8- Exec Chef (5-1) 5yo has established form in richer handicaps, gets in light today and prepped for this at Newmarket a week ago.
EXBOX- 1,2,8 Result: 2,5,8 Solid Stone (Even) roared home under Buick (3 wins today) and has a future in stakes-company from the looks of things.
Newbury 10:35- 1m (Str) Diomed Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo+) #3 has been withdrawn. #4- Zaaki (3-1) has an admirable lifetime record, as well as at a mile, and gets regular rider Ryan Moore in the saddle again today. GII-winner will be tough and should be ready to fire his best first out. #1- Stormy Antarctic (12-1) had his 2019 campaign cut short in July, GI-placed gelding would have to be a contender if he is able to continue at a high level. #7- King of Comedy (2-1) had a terrific 3yo season, just getting nosed in the GI St. James Palace at Royal Ascot and finishing a close-up fourth to Japan and Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte (GI). Class of the field.
EX- 4/1,7 Result: 2,7,4 The classy Century Dream finally finds the winner's enclosure again after wind surgery in the off-season. Fourth winner on the day for James Doyle.
