I've mentioned before, Roberto was a hero of mine. Tragic death on a humanitarian mission. he came up so big in the two World Series he got to play in, especially 1971.

Darn. Picked a bad time to be away from the forum for a few days!
If I remember, I’ll have to post a photo of the Clemente statute outside the first gate of PNC Park, right at the end of the Clemente Bridge.

Sorry Eric, that’s actually the Stargell statue, just down from the Clemente statue.

I don't make any claim Spanky. I have a couple of nice Clemente items and my wife has tried to discourage me from acquiring any more memorabilia. Have some nice autographs (Ali, Mantle, Jeter, Whitey Ford, Jim Brown, Gary Stevens, among the most notable). Also have a few nice cards, and figurines.
And in the non sports category, I have a signed Bad Actor photo!

I was lucky enough to see the Pirates play many times at Forbes Field as a kid from 66 to 68 and see Roberto gun down many a runner from right field with that cannon of his. It was a great stadium to watch a game.

Had to share this: local sports talk show interviewed Tom Walker the day after Kobe Bryant died and replayed it today. Walker is the father of ex-Pirate, current Phillie, Neil Walker, and was also a major leaguer in the 70s. Seems Walker was playing winter ball in Puerto Rico and knew Clemente. Walker and others loaded the planes full of supplies to take to Managua. There were 5 seats on the plane and Clemente decided to go on the flight because he was concerned the supplies weren’t reaching the right people. Walker said he’d join on the trip but Roberto insisted he stay and go celebrate New Year’s Eve. Walker said he’d sit or lie in the aisle if there wasn’t a seat but Clemente was quite adamant he stay in Puerto Rico. Later that night Walker learned of the crash. Clemente essentially saved Walker’s life.
An interesting side note, Clemente was very close with teammate Manny Sanguillen. Apparently the crash happened not long after the plane took off and crashed into the sea. Manny spent the next several days sitting on the beach (maybe near where the plane took off) waiting for Roberto to swim ashore. Manny was convinced that Roberto could do anything and surely survived the crash and would make it back. I guess Manny also volunteered to go on the plane. It was a great interview and a touching tribute to Roberto.
Of course, I assume most here know that the great sire (and racehorse) Roberto was named for Clemente.

There was a special I saw years ago on Roberto (Can't remember if it was on ESPN or not. I think it was titled "A touch of Royalty"- not positive. I have been looking for it for years hoping that they might put it on a DVD someday.

Hoop- thank you very much! I had never seen the second one. For lovers of baseball, whether you remember Roberto fondly or are too young, I strongly recommend both of these videos.
edit. I also highly recommend the following one:

Though I grew up a St Louis Cardinals fan (sorry), I admired him also and he always seemed to come up against us in clutch situations. They had a damned fine roster. Al Oliver is extremely underrated IMO. He got overshadowed by Clemente and Stargell but would have been the star player on most clubs.

Sad news circulating through Pittsburgh today. The Iconic Original Hotdog Shop (or simply, The O) is shutting down for good. Well known for heaping helpings of fresh cut fries (served with melted cheese wiz) and beef hotdogs (among other things) it is located in the heart of Pitt’s campus. Opened in 1960, it was then located directly across the street from Forbes Field. Have to think every Pirate ate there at least a few times, probably even The Great One.

It was a guilty pleasure, for sure. The school I attended was directly across the street, presumably where the Forbes Field grandstand would’ve been located. The small fries were a staple along with the chicken parm and fries. The cheesesteak was great, too. Oh, well, it had a great run.

Oh, well, it had a great run. do you know where "Soldiers and Sailors" hall is? well if you face it and then look to the left there is the old University Club. i worked there for several years. the club on the corner was the Concordia club. the workers there would play touch football on the grass at the S&S hall!! the U club had a outdoor patio on the 4 th floor. would have cook outs on fri nites. and to the right of S&S is the PAA club and up the street is the 20 century club---Women only!

Ended up rollerblading down by PNC Park and snapped a couple photos to add to this thread. The Bill Mazeroski statute sits outside the Right Field Gate and overlooks the Allegheny River. It commemorates Maz's walk off homer to win Game 7 of the 1960 World Series:

Outstanding photos gam.
MLB network has been showing a lot of old games during the shutdown. I watched the complete game 7 of the 1971 World Series last week. Steve Blass with a gem and Roberto with the key homer after Cuellar had retired the first 11 Pirates in order.

The radio station that airs the Pirates games has been replaying some Classic games, too. Blass is great and was the color guy on the local radio/tv coverage for a long time. Finally retired at the end of last season. I made it to the game where they honored him (second to last game) and gave out a bobblehead featuring both his playing and broadcasting career. He’ll be missed... assuming they actually play ball again.
