Tampa industrialist Sam F. Davis -- who starred as the quarterback and captain of the 1933 University of Florida football team -- was named track President in 1972, and in his first year at the helm, Florida Downs(now Tampa Bay Downs)amassed a record wagering handle. The track's second-most lucrative race, the Grade III, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes for 3-year-olds, is named in his honor.

Great question and after much research ( even found his gravestone) I still don’t know what the F stands for ! Very interesting life (and death) . Will see if I can find the answer when I’m at the track on Saturday (Am in ownership group of Don Bourbon and Tiz Rye Time ) www.findagrave.com/memorial/89668629/sam-f-davis

Picked up the phone this morning and called Tampa Bay Downs. Spoke to the nice lady at the switchboard... she transferred me to the Stewards Office - Mr. Dennis Lima answered. He asked the question about the "F" in Sam F. Davis to others in the office and nobody knew the answer. He said he would call Sam's daughter and ask her. He was kind to take my phone number and said he would call back with the answer.

Mr. Lima just called and said they have put in the call to Sam F. Davis' daughter and have not yet heard back... said they will be out of the office until Wednesday. He hopes to have an answer about the "F" in a few days. It's fun playing detective.

may as well tell you i've been high on sole volante for some time now. love the first two on turf and felt he showed the same turn nimbleness and willingness to move between rivals in the mucho macho man. felt that at the one turn mile it was likely a "prep well in defeat" to see where they were for two turn dirt tries moving ahead. so at tampa he finished the final 2f in 24.27 and exposed the 3/5 fav, dennis's moment as a false one. i invite you to view his body of work so far. it's my belief this is a serious horse.

Cheers Pete but you should post this on a different thread as it looks as if this one has turned out into what the F was the middle name of Sam Davis 😜

I have a guess....and it's just a guess. In his engagement announcement to Helen Ayala that shows up in a search, it mentions that Sam was a star football player at the University of Florida and that he was a member of the F. Club, which is a club for lettermen at the university. Sam was from Smyrna, Tn and there's a famous Sam Davis from Civil War days that was also from Smyrna.
I wonder if he used the F. to honor the F. Club at his college and to possibly distinguish him from the other famous Davis?

from haskins derby dozen. knew from tampa's live feed that his last quarter was :24.27. check out the third quarter. courtesy of bloodhorse.com
"2 Sole Volante Patrick Biancone
Karakontie—Light Blow, by Kingmambo
The reason he debuts so high on the rankings is because this is what a Derby horse is supposed to look like. He has a devastating closing kick on dirt and grass, in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) he blew right on by an undefeated dual stakes winner and one of the leading Derby contenders and won going away with his ears pricked, with a gap of 11 1/4 lengths to Remsen runner-up Ajaaweed in third. To show what a spectacular move he made, he ran his third quarter in an eye-catching :23.26, according to Trakus, making up 13 lengths, then just kept going, coming home the final sixteenth in :06.11. What makes his story so great is that you had to go through 3,493 yearlings at the Keeneland September sale to get him for a paltry $6,000. He was pinhooked at the OBS April 2-year-old sale and went for only $20,000 to Biancone."
