Wow , I would have thought the guys would have retired him rather than have the embarrassment of putting your million dollar horse in a claimer.

I am not schooled in how owning a racehorse works......but curious about.......there is so much involved..... I know that you buy the horse.... feed it....have veterinarians if needed.... What does it cost for stables at a racetrack? How does a trainer get paid? A jockey? Hot walkers?

Training fees cost anywhere from $75 a day to $130 a day depending on quality of trainer and location (New York is more expensive because of workmen’s compensation insurance. ) For that you get training, feed and board.. Any veterinary fees or special supplements are on top of that as well as blacksmith fees. Trainer is paid (or not paid if your name is Zayat) by the owner. Trainer also gets 10-13% of the purse winnings. He is supposed to give 2-3 % of that to his staff but that’s not always the case unfortunately. Jockey gets 10% of the purse if he wins the race otherwise he is on a fixed mount fee which ranges from $100 -$200 again depending on the location. Jockey is again paid by the owner but is automatically deducted from the owners horseman's account at the track so at least the jockeys can’t get stiffed by deadbeat owners. Hot walkers, exercise riders and grooms are paid by the trainers . Hope that answers most of your questions but here are some articles which I found informative last year www.paulickreport.com/news/ray-s-paddock/want-to-become-a-trainer-start-by-ponying-up/www.paulickreport.com/news/people/report-high-costs-may-drive-mclaughlin-out-of-new-york/

Thank you..... wasn’t sure how much payment depended on whether a race was won or if there were flat rates...
I guess if your horse is not a good runner they are real expensive .....

Speaking of crapshoot, Isle of Man a $850k purchase in Sept of 2018 at Keeneland, makes his first start for Pletcher in the 2nd at Gulfstream today. It's a $25,000 maiden claimer and he was gelded in December.
