Mongolian Groom sustained an injury in the Breeders’ Cup Classic today and was immediately attended to by an expert team of veterinarians, led by board certified veterinary surgeon Dr. Ryan Carpenter. During their evaluation at the equine hospital at Santa Anita, they observed a serious fracture to his left hind limb. Radiographs were taken and a complete evaluation was performed. Given the extent of the injury, Dr. Carpenter, in consultation with Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, veterinary surgeon and professor emeritus at Colorado State University, Dr. Rick Arthur, Equine Medical Director of the California Horse Racing Board, and attending veterinarian Dr. Vince Baker, recommended humane euthanasia of Mongolian Groom.

I am so sorry to hear about Mongo. Sadness today.
But Horse racing is nothing like cockfighting, dogfighting, etc.
The PROBLEM is that making racing as safe as humanly possible should have always been up front and center, and in many ways, that has not been the case. I've been a racing fan for almost 25 years, so I know this. Scofflaws have not been uniformly disciplined, and some of the tracks that we all know have bad practices bring the whole industry down, as well as all the good and honest people in it.
THere is no way to achieve zero deaths, but when you wait til horse racing is under the microscope when good practices industry-wide hasn't been a priority, it does become "squirm-worthy" when something happens.
(Just like Deep Water Horizon wasn't an *random accident*).
If you see the article about the bone scans done on some of the Melborne Cup horses, horses shouldn't be running high intensity stakes races with fractures, unhealed fractures, hairline fractures, lack of bone density in limbs, etc. PERIOD end of story IMHO. Just don't do it.
While I agree that animal rights activists and john q. public are over reacting, in many cases it's because they really don't know all the ins and outs of the sport, but perception is also important, and when I, AS A RACING FAN, find myself clenching my teeth over some of the stuff I've seen in the 25 years I've been following this, then you really can't blame them.
I do my part by educating and explaining some of the stuff about horse racing to friends who question me about it. That's all I can do. I try to put the sport in a positive light.........but I stop short of being an apologist for some of the people and practices that I don't feel deserve a good review. I'm a "always room for improvement" person, in all things.
"took a bad step" shouldn't be a euphemism for every breakdown.

Brutal end to the Breeders Cup in the only race that was shown on network tv. They always took a big risk keeping the BC at Santa Anita and it looked like paying off until the final throw of the dice when their luck ran out. Very sad for the connections of Mongolian Groom. RIP.

Yes, tragic. The horse had developed nicely and I gave him a reasonable shot at the Classic. I hadn't heard and was hoping for the best. As for us players, it'll be interesting to see what the fallout is from this incident.
