Contest winner turned 7500 into 147,750. Gets that and 360,000 prize money. My 90 cent balance was good for 229th of 457. At one point today Eddie and were next to each other on the leaderboard with about 1200 each. He finished considerably better to pocket $12,000. Oddly enough that is enough for a Pegasus BC entry Eddie

Uhhhhh....
The year of the inquiry....
The guy in the lead got a 10,000 point penalty for not betting at least 600 on 7 of the breeders cup races today. Drops him to 2nd and cost him 114,000 in prize money.

Twitterverse says the guy was playing 8 entries via beards. (rules allow 2)
If that’s true, it’s gotta be crazy to keep track of... And karma is b!tch.

Eric, curious how you approached that tournament betting wise? And do you hit a point where you give up on cashing and simply try to get the bankroll portion back or go for the glory?

GAM - the plan was to protect the bankroll and If I got up some use that to go for the glory.
The plan did not age well, and I was going for the glory by the FIRST race on Friday. LOL.
The wagers will be out soon, I'm interested to see how the leaders got there. 4 of the top 5 had two entries and their other entry finished with 0. Plenty of people were at 0 well before the last race, a few early on Friday.

I just read the rules and worked it out. If you don’t bet the minimum races you are “fined” 10,000 points. These 11 guys must have been wiped out before they had a chance to meet the minimum requirement. Strange that I haven’t seen any big announcement on the winner yet. Are they waiting for the drug tests to come back ?

What kind of bets were you making, or was it a hodgepodge depending on circumstances?

Bev - many people make their all in play early, trying to build a bankroll. The “winner” also only bet the 600 min in 6 races Saturday and was penalized 10,000 points, which knocked him back to 2nd and cost him over $100,000 in prize money.
Gam - mostly $20 tri’s and $100-$200 doubles. A few close calls and hit a couple backup $2 tris, and a $20 exacta on the Juvy Filly Turf (Pletchers horse hanging in for 3rd cost me a $20 tri)

when i was in the 2016 contest i took the 600 from each race and cut it in half i bet 150 to win and then 50 across the board with 300, then the other 300 i would bet an exacta key with the horse i wanted to win on top of everyone else. on the second day i would do the same thing with the 900 you had to bet per race. i would up coming in 24th place i believe winning a little over 20,000 dollars.

Thanks for posting Eric. Fascinating read. The first two went all in on the last race which paid dividends while the big leader stayed pat and ended up third ! The prevent defense rarely works !

does anybody know why somebody would wager like this at the BCBC? Why not put the total amount in once? Tax implications? Limitation of wagering system? Just wondering.

Really liked Opus Won, and thought 13-1 on Kookie Gal was the best value of the race. Played a $3 tri with those two on top of 5 others, and $1 with those 5 on top. Rayana ruined a pretty good score. Race: 3 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $60.00 $0.00 $0.00 8/9,11-12/9,11-12 TRI $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 8/11/9,12 TRI $48.00 $0.00 $0.00 B8-9,11-12 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 8/7 $178.00 $0.00 $0.00 11 -BEEN STUDYING HER 5.00 3.60 2.80 12 -SMILING SHIRLEE 5.60 4.00 4 -WARREN'S SHOWTIME 5.40
Keyed in on Bulletproof One Who got the lead, but couldn't hold up to the 7f distance. Used 3 others, with a little extra on the favorite they ran 1,2,&4. Nearly backed into a small win with the $4 tri box.
Race: 4 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $60.00 $0.00 $0.00 7/2,4,8/2,4,8 TRI $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 7/2/4 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 7/2 $130.00 $0.00 $0.00

Thought it was a two horse race with Chipper and Cali Dude. Sided with Chipper thinking he had a bit of a troubled trip 1st out and Cali Dude would have to run a little faster early with the big field. Chipper got banged around early and never ran a step, Cali Dude didn't make the lead and couldn't run down Tap Back who i still can't figure...

First BC race and had to bet $600 min on 3 of the 5 Friday. With the two Dirt races looking really chalky and I wasn't really in love with anyone in either, so $600 min in the turf races was the plan. Main play was a $10 tri with Band Practice over 6 other, and $5 with Band Practice in 2nd. Band practice didn't break great, and got in a mess of traffic and packed it in along with my wagers. Did cover the first three finishers with others that I used heaviest. Was kicking myself for not playing 1,2,3,9 box backup ticket like I had in previous races.
Race: 6 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners EX $100.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/12 EX $25.00 $0.00 $0.00 12/3 EX $25.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/2 TRI $210.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/1-2,4,6,12-14/1-2,4,6,12-14 TRI $126.00 $0.00 $0.00 1-2,4,6,12-14/3/1-2,4,6,12-14 TRI $30.00 $0.00 $0.00 B2-3,12 TRI $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/12/2 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/1 DD $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/1 $606.00 $0.00 $0.00
2 -STRUCTOR 12.60 7.20 5.20 8 -BILLY BATTS 33.40 18.20 9 -GEAR JOCKEY 20.20
Hammered away on Peace Achieved off his KD and Keeneland wins, he didn't run a step. Used Structor and Fort Myers heaviest. Structor won Fort Myers rad mid pack. Pretty bummed at this point having fired two of my 3 big shots for the day and they are averaging finishing 12th...
Race: 7 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $36.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/4,6-7/2-7,9 TRI $60.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/4,6-7/4,6-7 TRI $36.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/2-7,9/4,6-7 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/11 $182.00 $0.00 $0.00
4 -BRITISH IDIOM 7.40 3.80 2.80 1 -DONNA VELOCE 4.00 3.00 6 -BAST 3.40
Smaller bets keying Donna Veloce heaviest with the favorites and a little with all (except the 8) and $50 double to Sharing. Donna Ran well, but couldn't quite hang with British Idiom.
Race: 8 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $448.00 $0.00 $0.00 5,9,11,13/1,3-5,8-11,13/1,3-5,8-11,13 TRI $30.00 $0.00 $0.00 1,3-4,8,10/5,9,11,13/5,9,11,13 TRI $60.00 $0.00 $0.00 11/5,9,13/5,9,13 EX $60.00 $0.00 $1,602.00 11/5,9,13 TRI $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 11/5,9/5,9 DD $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 11/2 DD $20.00 $0.00 $0.00 11/6 $658.00 $0.00 $1,602.00
11 -SHARING 29.60 10.60 8.40 5 -DAAHYEH-GB 5.60 3.80 12 -SWEET MELANIA 4.60
Went pretty wide here using Sharing heaviest, with Daahyeh, Albigna, and Selflessly next. Caught a $20 exacta, and had $20 doubles live Wrecking Crew and Eight Rings, but Pletcher's Sweet Melania, busted up all the Trifecta tickets, including the $22 worth on the 11-5-9 first-second-forth version that would have paid about $14k.
Race: 9 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners EX $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 6/2 TRI $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 6/1/2 TRI $30.00 $0.00 $0.00 B1-2,6 TRI $24.00 $0.00 $0.00 6/2-5/2-5 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 6/3 DD $40.00 $0.00 $0.00 2,6/2-3 $244.00 $0.00 $0.00
4 -STORM THE COURT 93.80 24.80 12.00 7 -ANNEAU D'OR 17.60 10.40 2 -WRECKING CREW 12.20
Figured Eight Rings was more likely to run his race then Dennis, and liked Wrecking Crew a bit. None of that worked. Pretty sure I had pick 5's live to both too. Bummer of a race IMO. Was salt in the wound when all the Tgraph folks started chiming in as their seminar which I didn't buy/read said toss the favorites and play Shoplifted and Storm the Court.
Race: 10 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $120.00 $0.00 $0.00 2-3/1-3,8,12/1-3,8,2 TRI $120.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/1-2,8,12/1-2,8,12 EX $40.00 $0.00 $0.00 B2-3 EX $3.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/8 EX $4.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/1,12 TRI $12.00 $0.00 $0.00 1,8,12/2-3/2-3 EX $80.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/2 TRI $8.00 $0.00 $0.00 3/2,8/2,8 $387.00 $0.00 $0.00
8 -THREEFIVEINDIA 8.20 5.20 4.20 7 -SECRET COURIER 8.00 6.20 14 -LEROY 12.20
Really liked Heartfullofstars and Candy Cornell. Nether ran a step. $7500 bankroll down to $5900 and change.

Race: 1 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $200.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/3-5,8-9/3-5,8-9 TRI $100.00 $0.00 $0.00 3-5,8-9/1/3-5,8-9 TRI $60.00 $0.00 $0.00 B1,3,5 EX $40.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/3,5 DD $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/4 $450.00 $0.00 $0.00
4 -JUST GRAZED ME 7.40 4.00 2.80 5 -APACHE PRINCESS 5.20 4.40 1 -IPPODAMIA'S GIRL 8.40
With my $5900 I had to play 7 races at $600 min, leaving $1700 in discretionary bankroll. With optimism I attacked day 2's first race with a sizeable total of $450 a little more than 25% of what I had available.
REALLY Liked Ippodamia's Girl who had been speed and fade last two times going two turns, but had shown a bit of sprint ability in two prior tries. Bejarano took her back, which I liked and hoped for, but waited inexplicable long to ask her to run. She went grinding for the lead, but didn't have an Uni type explosive kick she would have needed from when he tried to get her going. Anyway, ran 3rd.... Didn't like Just Grazed Me on short rest to it only cost me a $50 double that I think was paying around $2500...
Race: 2 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners DD $200.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/1 $200.00 $0.00 $0.00
4 -FLAGSTAFF 4.00 2.40 > 3 -ROADSTER 2.60 > 2 -EXTRA HOPE > >
Pretty sad to have a race on BC day, that doesn't even have a show pool. I thought Flagstaff was much the best, he wasn't but still won. $200 double live to Originaire...
Race: 3 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $84.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/3-5,7-9,11/3-5,7-9,11 TRI $120.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/5,7-9/5,7-9 TRI $30.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/7/5,8-9 TRI $24.00 $0.00 $0.00 5,7-9/1/5,7-9 EX $100.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/7 EX $25.00 $0.00 $0.00 7/1 TRI $24.00 $0.00 $0.00 5,7-9/5,7-9/1 DD $200.00 $0.00 $0.00 1/4 $607.00 $0.00 $0.00

(1)Originaire's race prior was a pretty big jump, but to a 3.75, pretty good chance for a bounce, but it was best in the field and he was a price. (7)Ocean Fury's 5.25 last was a small top putting him in the same group as the favorites at a nice price. Keyed Originaire and went for a couple heavy tickets with Ocean Fury. none of that worked out
Race: 4 Pool Bets Refunds Winnings Runners TRI $72.00 $0.00 $0.00 3-4,7/1,3-4,7,9/1,3-4,7,9 TRI $120.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/3,7/1,3,7,9 TRI $40.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/3,7/3,7 EX $100.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/3,7 EX $50.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/7 TRI $18.00 $0.00 $0.00 B3-4,7 DD $200.00 $0.00 $0.00 4/3 $600.00 $0.00 $0.00
Really liked (4)Come Dancing, and was against Covfefe (3yo filly of huge fig probably bounces). (7)Selcourt and (3) Heavenhasmynikki both seemed likely to run well, they didn't. Nor did Come Dancing.
BR at $4043 with 6 min bets ($3600) and 8 races left.

The pain begins... Did some terrible over thinking/handicapping from here on out. Maybe the pressure of the contest...
Keyed (3) Imprimis based on last years figs and some news that I found about him well training in FL despite no published works. Played hardest with (12) Belvoir Bay who had been one of my stronger opinions leading up to the day.

Keyed (1) Giant Expectations. Had been leaning Spun to Run, but over thought the small time trainer shipping and jumped to GE thinking he would have enough speed to hold his rail position coming out of that 7f race. he broke slow and got all jammed up in traffic. backed into the $2 tri box and made a little profit on the race though.

Really liked everything about Iridessa, but the O'Brien's mounting terrible record here just kept gnawing at me. Ended up bailing in favor of (4) Billesdon Brook who was a big price, had competitive figs in Europe and seemed to have some early speed to stay close, which it seemed was very helpful. She hopped at the start and ended up considerably further back than expected and never made a run. Meanwhile Iridessa stays in closer wins it.
Backed into another Tri box, but still a loss on the race thanks to an ill advised $500 win bet on Billesdon Brook
BR at $3179. need to make 3 more min ($1800) bets, 5 races left. Leaders still around $40k

Hammered away on Catalina Cruiser, and was against Shancelot. Catalina didn't have or use enough speed from the gate and got buried in the kickback and didn't put in much of a run. If make another bet on a horse out of the Pat O'brien someone poke me in the eye.

Thought Got Stormy was the most likely winner, and Hey Gaman was great value after showing some good early speed in europe and seeming to do much better in his firmer ground races. Really had to make up ground fast in the contest, so I played those two hardest with a little Circus Maximus.

Playing a first time starter at Hawthorne in the HPWS with 2 bullets left and three races, and passing on Secret Spice still eats at me. 6 figure lessons will do that i guess. Wasn't really excited about anyone in here, liked Secret Spice some, Ollies Candy Some. Probably was on tilt by this point so I put about 900 chasing those two...

BR was down to 541, wasn't really much point in saving much for the classic if I didn't hit here and get some real money the classic wouldn't matter, so I pretty much bet out. Liked Old Persian best, but 4-1 wasn't going to be much help. Really liked Zulu Alpha, and Alounak I thought was really good value at 50-1. Still not sure why Ortiz waited soooo long to get Zulu Alpha going, different ride and I think he had a shot.

last $15 on a cold tri with War of Will on top. Didn't really like him, but he was a price and I figured he would be on the lead. At some point during the week I emailed Pete and said I thought it was McKinze over Vino cold in the classic. I cooled a bit on Vino after that, but like to think I wouldn't have gone broke on the race if I had a big BR to throw at it in the contest.
These live money contests are a different animal. Hopefully I get the chance to play again and see if I learned anything.

Thanks, Eric. I pretty much butchered the weekend. I was thinking the Peter Miller horses would run well and yet, somehow, failed to make a dime on them. I haven't been monitoring this sub-forum enough and may have missed it, did you win an entry or pay your way in?

Reason I was asking is that he had a lot of followers on Twitter and some guys staked him for the BCBC but apparently he never entered and stiffed them, causing quite a kerfuffle in the horse racing Twittersphere. Maybe Tony knows him as he’s Canadian also (Spanky logic) 😜

Cool chart of how the leaderboard changed over time
Bev - I did catch a bit of that on Twitter too, but didn’t really know anyone involved.

Bev I have never even heard of said individual. Does anybody know his/her real name? Where in Canada is he/she from? First I have heard of this but I am not really a part of the twitterverse (horseracing or otherwise). I do have a twitter account but pretty much abandoned it many moons ago. Having said that, I am available to be staked for the next BCBC. And, I will promise to attend and play the contest without absconding unless I should win big. If that should happen then you will never see me again! Seems to me that is the way to run the scam appropriately. Get the stake...play...if you lose go back to the well again next year. Keep doing it until you win big then go into hiding...somewhere in Texas maybe...where does Spanky live again? These folks must be big time amateurs
