Lookin' for a long shot in the Bemont.
In February an nondescript horse named Everfast was entered in the Holy Bull. Just about everyone ignored him – and for good reason so he was unbet up to 130/1.. But something happened. No one told him he couldn't win. So he tried anyway and, damn, he finished 2nd and was still closing on the winner when he crossed the wire. He almost won – and at 130/1. He couldn't do that again, could he? Most people said “No! He will never do that again,” After another three more terrible starts and being unbet up to approximate 70/1 in his last three races, Mr. Romans entered him in one of horse racing's holy of holy's – The Preaknes, and in a song by Jimmy Reed he said "We're gonna do what they say can't be done.". Even though he was now facing some of America's top 3yr olds a few of the betting public unbet him up to only 30/1 and they almost "done it" finishing 2nd again. Now Mr. Romans has entered him into another of horse racing's holy of holys - The Belmont. Do you think Mr. Romans might have yet another trick up his sleeve? I have to key this one on a ticket somehow.
Master Fencer – the great unknown. I know one thing that makes me want to “invest” some money in him Saturday. In the Derby he ran last of 19 for the first 6 furlongs and in the last 4 furlongs he passed 12 horses and closed to within 4 lengths of the leader when he crossed the wire. I have to admit the early half mile was quicker that usual and that helped him a little. His sire's average winning distance was 8.5 Fs so I reason to believe he won't have much of a problem getting the distance. Julien Lepapoux is not one of this countries top 10 jockeys but you're not giving away much when you put him on one of your horses in a graded stakes race. However, I would sure prefer to so a more aggressive rider up top on him Saturday. He'll be on a ticket somewhere. I'm hoping he'll go off at double digits.
One of our stewards here at Upinclass just happens to own a nice hunk of Bourbon War and he's the sole stayer in Saturday's race that was the class to a big noise if he can get a little help on the front end. Nothing could make us all happier if one or two others decides to go out with #1 Joeiva – and he will be going out as fast as he can. His sire is Shanghai Bobby, a quality sprinter but only a sprinter. The only reason he is in this race is the same reason many owners of non Triple Crown quality horse were enter into these races over the years - so the owner can brag a little for the rest of their lives that they had a horse in the Derby, Preaknes or Belmont. Maybe, just maybe, the good Lord thinks it's time for a Scot to win a TC race. Bev knows we all love him and we all want to see the Bourbon flow across the wire first. Amen.
If I have to take the chalk it'll be War Of Will but I'll lose money if he or Tacitus wins.
Got a long shot you like? Tell us about it.
