The new Hall Of Fame voting rules really had an impact here, and it might be a good thing. There were 10 nominees, and voters could cast votes for all or none, and 50.1% of the vote would get any of the 10 into the Hall. Heavenly Prize was the only one of the nominees that got the requisite percentage so she was the only one of the 10 that made it in. This might be the best voting criteria that the HOF has come up with in a long time.
I remember back 10 years ago when the voters HAD to elect one from each of four categories into the HOF. Male horse, female horse, trainer, and jockey. What a mess that was. It pitted one horse or one human against another which is not what the Hall Of Fame is supposed to be about.
Then, they changed it. Now it was electing four to the Hall without regard to horses or humans. The four highest vote getters got in whether it was horses or humans, I think they made that change in 2010 or so, and I'm convinced that the change was made because both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra retired in 2010. That meant that they would both be eligible for the HOF in 2016. Under the old voting rules, that meant that one of them would get into the HOF before the other, and that was just unthinkable.
Now, they've actually done something that is surprisingly good. By naming 10 nominees and opening up the voting so that voters can choose any or all, and requiring a 50.1% for induction, the horses and/or humans that get that 50.1% are probably over-all the most worthy of induction.
Heavenly Prize is the only one of 10 nominees that got 50.1% of the vote. She gets in, nobody else does, at least this year.
I think that's a good thing.
