I love playing the super in the derby, as there always are late-running bombs coming into the top 4 when initial contenders ease up in the stretch to fight another day. Commanding Curve behind Chrome in 2014 is the poster boy for that! This year looks prime for a huge payout with no clear leader in the field. It does take some $ to play a lot of combos so I lean to the $0.50 supers, with the mix of contenders and late running clunkers. Here are payoffs over the last few years for $0.50 supers, some nice ones!
2018 $9,800
2017 $37,500
2016 $270
2015 $317
2014 $3,845
2013 $14,250
2012 $24,000
2011 $12,000
2010 $50,500
2009 $139,250
2008 $14,680
2007 $7,250

Hey Grommet,
Thanks for the heads up & time to sell some real estate to get enough $$ that will fund a well structured ticket! I still believe the super payoffs are worth a flyer. Good luck!

You are exactly right Thunderbolt. Last year was my first venture into the Derby super wager which i otherwise enjoy throughout the year at the typical .10 minimum.
By going all in on Justify for the win and going 5 horses, 9 horses, and 11 horses in the 2d 3d and 4th slots i was able to cash the super for a $360 total wager. The luck was getting Instilled Regard home at 85-1 for fourth.
But considering the super included the favorite and maybe the 3d and 4th faves as well i thought it an unbelievable payout.
Biggest score i ever had. So i am definitely back for another shot this year.

Hey Dam,
Nice hit last year! Sadly, just picking one horse to win will be much more challenging this year, so the "investment" to cover a reasonable outcome is going to be expensive. But, it will be a shocker if the super doesn't pay well over last year's $19,600!
Right now I am thinking a single needs to be found and placed in at least 1,2 &3 place, maybe 4th as well, and surrounded by the inevitable mix of contenders & closing bombs. My first inclination is Tacitus.
Good luck!
