That's very cool Spanky. Sort of approaching wizard's chess in the Harry Potter series.
One of my favorite possessions is a chess set with forged metal pieces that have a civil war theme - The kings are Lee and Grant, the bishops are well known generals from each side, the knights are cavalry leaders and the like. On a different level, I've taught my grandchildren to play chess on a board that is a 4' square rug, with equally large pieces that could pass for children's toys. Using it seemed to keep them more interested in the game than much smaller pieces would have. It has always amazed me just how quickly young minds could pick up the basics of the game.

Very cool JB...You should consider joining the chess site Its Your Turn.com
It's free to play and they offer many games and variations of games. You get 15 moves a day for free. Dell and I joined for a silly low price to be members. It's like $20 bucks for 6 months but they have different prices, all cheap. If you join that makes 4 of us UIC members! I encourage anyone to check it out...Dell and I are currently battling it out in a game like Battle Ship!
I learned to play on a board with Gothic theme pieces when I was in second grade. Have you ever played on a 3 dimensional board? PLayed on a clear plastic board with 3 levels....

My wife gave me a three dimensional board as a birthday present many years ago. It's still around somewhere. My recollection is that it took a bit too much Spock-like logic to discern the potential moves through the three levels and to guard against all potential attacks.

enjoyed games with spanky and dell(amazing photos lol!)--itsyourturn is an easy to use user friendly chess site. I used to play a lot in the 70s, including a multi-year try in USCF tourneys. Have beaten a master(in a 20player simul lol), but have yet to win a game vs the hustlers in Washington Square and never down the street(Thompson?) at the sadly gone Village Chess Club. I do Sponsor and occasionally help out with a local youth chess organization and unfortunately rarely play now. Probably have a 20+ collection of chess books(openings, games and fundamental theory). Good mind exercise...
what a group of legends..can you name them?
